Worthing - Pearl Hood & Stanley Wood School of Dancing 1930 - 1979
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 19:50 UTC (UK) »

Pearl Hood taught dancing in Worthing from 1930 until her death in 1979. She married Stanley Wood in 1948 & they ran the school jointly until his death in 1978.

Together they put on annual shows at the Pier Pavilion, Worthing. Initially dancing displays, from 1956 this included a Pantomime.

I have a complete set of pantomime programmes (1956 to 1979). I have a selection (incomplete) of the separate dancing displays (1939, 1947 to 1950, 1954, 1955, 1972 to 1977). These list a large number of the dancing school pupils (& parents & friends who also took part) by name, many indicating the roles they played in the shows. There are too many to realistically list - but if you have someone you would like to me look up I would be happy to so (please indicate approx dates), and will happily send scans by email off list.

I also have programmes for Terry Clough's pantomimes 1952, 1954, 1955. Also the Home Guard Garrison Theatre "Best of Both" 1940. Plus Worthing Review Company "Something Snappy" 1975. Once again, happy to look up & send scans to those who are interested.

I would also love to receive scans of any that I am missing  - so if anyone has any that I am missing, I would love to hear from you.

I would also like to contact anyone who had contact with Pearl Hood i(particularlyi n the period 1938 to 1940 - or not too long after) during which she is believed to have had a child which was "unofficially adopted" - this child would be my half-sibling, of whom I know very little, other than several people confirm this child existed (including someone who remembers holding the baby) - my best chance of finding further information would be to contact people with associations with the dancing school at that time.

I know I'm pushing it to find people still alive who would remember that period - but it's possible - so it has to be worth asking. Any information, no matter how small, would be gratefully received.

I attach one of their classic advert photos which appeared on many of the programmes.
