Good on you Raylen and it looks like you only needed to get into the first couple of years of the file!

Sue,

Even though they are very large files, if you click on the
letter C , it shows all surnames starting with that letter by year.
So not too hard really  Smiley

The National Library digitised newspaper site has many mentions of CANDY.
http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
I only looked at the Family Notices for The Argus and found the following, many of which have interesting snippets of addresses etc

Deaths (dates are those of publication of the newspaper not the BMD date)
17 Sep 1856, William CANDY senior, late of Gloucester (England)

27 Sep 1858, Jessie, at Collingwood, aged 9, daughter of W J M CANDY

29 Mar 1862, James CANDY at Woodend, of Keilor and formerly of Frome, aged 67, also a funeral notice, giving son-in-law’s address

27 Mar 1865,  Harriet, widow of William CANDY and mother of William CANDY of Fitzroy

29 Sep 1873, Sarah, relict of James of  Keilor (gives married names of her daughters)

Births
2 May 1881, son to wife of Ralph CANDY

Marriages:
22 April 1876, George ALEXANDER to Jeannette CANDY, gives address of bride’s parents

1 Apr 1879, James KIDD to Edith, 3rd dau of William CANDY – gives another address of bride’s parents

23 Feb 1880, Ralph CANDY to Lucy WOOD

And many more......................

Cheers, Judith

Thanks so much for all this great information. It is excellent to confirm William's second marriage to Annie Loft, and fascinating to learn that he divorced as early as 1912.

It would be great to find Edith's death if indeed she lived on beyond 1937. I am intrigued by the NSW marriage, but I suspect she didn't remarry after the divorce, which must have been quite shocking at that time.

Thank you for spending so long on this enquiry for me, I really appreciate it.

Regards

On the subject of the Argus, I spent much longer than I should yesterday looking for Candy references. It's an absolute treasure trove, although the Optical Character Recognition software is a bit hit and miss, especially with old and indistinct documents, and where the words bend in towards the middle of the binding.

Interestingly, William and Harriet Candy are my greatx3 grandparents; I'm so lucky that they emigrated to Victoria and ended up with such informative death certificates!

Thanks so much for all these snippets.

Kind regards - Phil

Edith was still in Victoria as Edith Candy in 1937......and her death is absolutely frustrating me.  There's no remarriage for an Edith Candy in Victoria to 1942.

Annie Bolinda Candy died aged 68 in 1951 at FROY.
Her parents were Geo Arth LOFT & Lucy Rose KEDDELL.

Raylen

I just wanted to thank you for this particular lookup. It's completely new to me, and obviously involved looking outside the usual record series.

Thanks a lot for engaging with this search.

I'd like to thank everyone for their valuable help with this research; I am now going to close this thread.

Kind regards

Phil

Hi

I found what I thought could be a possible marriage for Edith as Mary Edith Candy to James Swan Kidd in 1879 #389 (6 children between 1879 and 1892) Leslie Stuart 1880, Ella Jeanette 1881, Florence Jessie 1883, Edith Muriel 1884, Harriett Victoria 1887 & Cleveland James 1892

Then found her death in 1916 #12356 father WILLIAM CANDY and MARY SMITH so here is another twig located.

regards

Robyn

I have been going back over these six children and I have found the marriages of all of them, except Ella Jeanette, which i think was in 1909 to Harry CHRISTIE.

Could someone please confirm this, and maybe also help me to find her death, which i think was around 1968.

I think that Ella and harry had three children: Mollie; Marjory and Geoffrey, but I don't know exactly when

I'd appreciate help with this please.

Kind regards

Phil Candy

Just caught me, Phil.  Smiley
I'll be shutting down shortly and heading off to Adelaide.

Ella Jeanette Christie did indeed die in 1968 at HEAL. She was 87 and parents were Edith Candy and James Swa Kidd.
Ref = 1773.

My first search from 1889  to 1920 doesn't reveal a marriage though.  Undecided
