Information wanted please

Please could someone tell me who i would contact to try to get my grand fathers military photograph, he joined the army in 1917 but in south africa on his papers it says unit on entering theatre of war  S A VETERAN RGT and thats dated march 1922.
Ive tried almost everything to get a photo but i cant seem to find anything or anyone that knows how i would go about it
thank you in advance for any information

Hi Linda

The army did not take photographs. Apart from family held ones the only other source are local newspapers; but mainly for men killed, wounded or awarded a gallantry medal.

You should also ask at the man's local record office. Books were published for the Manchester area that contain some group photographs, and I have seen one for Argyllshire showing individual pictures. There may have been others.

Linda is a British army record you have or South Africa papers just a bit confused??
Could it say SA Veteran RGA as in  meaning Royal Garrison artillery and Boer War Veteran?

Hi everyone and Thank you for the advice, the papers i have came from the department of defence and at the top of the papers it says south african expeditionary forced then it gives you the details about his height etc  then it says 1st brigade south african infantry place johannesburg 26th march 1917 then his discharge paper.
