can anyone tell me the parentage of william ward born abt 1805 castle sowerby carlisle

Hi
The way I understood the submitted entry was that William married Esther and there is a list of their children too.
I had a look at the christenings for Castle Sowerby which range from 1738 - 1875, there are only two Williams noted, one in 1768 and the other 1819 which are way out for your William.
I wonder if he was christened elsewhere?

This may be a possible but not a definite.
William Ward 19 Aug 1806 christened at Raughton Head, Cumberland to parents William Ward and Peggy Monkhouse.
William Ward and Margaret Monkhouse were married at Castle Sowerby 6 July 1794
Raughton Head is about 4 miles from Castle Sowerby.
If this is your William and the one that married Esther he also had two of his children christened at Raughton Head.

Hi, found the births of 4 children to William Ward and Margaret(Monkhouse).
He was 25 years old and a farmer and Margaret was 24 years old when married, 6th July1794 at Castle Sowerby.
Robert Ward 1801
Margaret Ward 1804
William Ward 1806
Elizabeth Ward 1812
They were all baptised at Raughton Head.

Many thanks for this information I travelled to Carlisle to look at the Parish Records and could not find anything other than the marriage of William to Esther are there any other records available?

I came to this one a bit late, but I'm a bit confused too!
If the list that Lorimer found was in the actual records, than the baotisms must be there. The only thing I can think of is that these old records tend to jump around as new books and rules were introduced so that all of the reel will not be in chronological order.
On the early part, there will be baptisms, burials and births, possibly a group of each per year, or even mixed up so needing a lot of reading, then among other changes a new marriage book comes in, so marriages are separate and eventually there are books with forms for all three events so they are separate.
This often means the reels jump around a bit and especially around 1800 you may get a small piece of register well away from the rest or even on another reel.
OIf these were still the submitted ones, then the area may be right but the church is passed down by word of notes or family notes and we can look else where. This area's still quite sparsely populated and most people won't live by the church.
My next choice would be Sebergham. Some chapels weren't open at this date or didn't do marriages. -Failing that, some older parishes would be Caldbeck, Dalston, Skelton or Greystoke, and of course some people even went to the towns - Penrith or Carlisle.
I would try Sebergham next though.

Regarding the marriage certificate of william and margaret and the birth of their children. I did see the origional parish records at Carlisle Records office. The records for Castle Sowerby and Raughton Head are on different Reels. They are villages next to each other though. I can go back and get copies of the births of the children if it helps!

Hi, went back to Carlisle Records and rechecked the records for Castle Sowerby and Raughton Head.
Reel no 978
As follows:-
William and Margaret Ward, (Nee Monkhouse) of Haithwaite Lane, Castle Sowerby, children baptised were
March 11th 1796 son,Edward
December 20th 1801 son, Robert
May 13th 1804, daughter, Margaret
August 19th, 1806, son, William
September 6th 1812, daughter, Elizabeth
On all the baptism records it states the mother was Nee (Monkhouse).
Also
Found a marriage for daughter Elizabeth, married at Raughton Head parish church. As follows,
1843 May 22nd
James Turnbull (Joiner), father ,John Turnbull (Labourer)
married Elizabeth Ward (Servant), father, William Ward (Yeoman)
Children as follows,
1843, August 6th ,daughter, Mary
1845, May 18th, son, William
1847, September 19th, daughter, Margaret
1853, June 12th, son, John
Also
Found a Will for James Turnbull dated 1884.
Daughter Mary to inherit twenty pounds and silver spoons. Wife to have use of the money and spoons as long as she lives and wife to have stockintrade, leasehold, monies and linen.
Value sixtynine pounds and seven shillings.
Also found,
William (Miller) by trade and Esther Ward of Haithwaite Lane
children as follows,
1828 September 21st, son, John
1831 March 19th, daughter, Mary
Also found,
John (Mason) by trade and Mary Ward of Haithwaite Lane
children as follows,
1842 March 20th, daughter, Betsy
1844 November 24th, daughter, Margaret
Also found, Robert (Labourer) by trade and Martha Ward of Haithwaite Lane
1832 September 2nd, daughter , Margaret
1836 March 5th, daughter, Esther
Two more Wills, as follows,
Thomas Ward dated 1898 of Haithwaite Lane
All estate to William Turnbull (Joiner) ,made sole executor.
and
Margaret Ward dated 1880 of Haithwaite Lane,
To sister Elizabeth all linen which belonged to mother.
Nephew Thomas Ward to have all cottage houses and premises at Haithwaite Lane, value under twenty pounds.
also I noted that the Monkhouse family also lived on Haithwaite Lane.
