Removing Norton from Vista *Completed*
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 10:08 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

The Norton subscription on my son's laptop has expired, and he asked me to install a free AV package.
I uninstalled Norton, and installed the AV that I use successfully (Rising), on XP.
The laptop wouldn't run. It booted to a blank screen, no task bar or icons, and then "stuck".
I took Rising off, and tried Comodo. The laptop wouldn't start, I just got the side-scrolling bars at the bottom of the screen.

Each time, I disconnected the battery, plugged it back in, and the machine "self restored", and is now as it was.

Is there something I need to know about Vista, or Norton, that is preventing these packages from installing properly?

Dell Inspiron, Vista 32.

Thanks, 'Hat.

How did you remove Norton ?   Removing it via Windows "Add or Remove Software" isn't the best way, because bits get left behind.

Go to the Symantec site, where you can download a Norton removal tool.

Thanks, Nick, that's exactly what I did.

Go to the Symantec site, where you can download a Norton removal tool.

I'll go get the tool now, although son is not keen on me having another go, yet!

Even after using the removal tool, you'll still find remnants of it on the computer.  Fortunately nothing that will cause problems  Smiley

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalled all of the Norton programs except Security Scan.

The laptop is now running again, so I'll leave it as it is (for now!).

Thanks again, Nick.
