Hi I was wondering if there is anyone else on here that are looking for information on Robert and Mary Taylor nee Balsom who came out to Port Jackson, New South Wales around 1839, I have some information on their son Albert and his family, but have no prev information on Robert and Mary before they arrived here. At this stage am unsure of when Robert or Mary were born, or where they lived. If anyone can help would be most appreciated. I have been given some info on their possible married in Feb 1837 in Damerel, Devon but am unsure if this is them. any help would be appreciated. thanks ChrisK nee Taylor

Hi ChrisK, I have a Mary Balsome married to George Harvies Symonds, from Dameral Devon, they arrived here 1853. not your Mary, but likely to be a relative. Christian Balsom was her father and mother was another Mary unknown. This is still a work in progress so will keep you in mind. Regards, Abygail

Hi Chris,
Just to add a bit to what Jenn has provided re the immigration
Robert was the son of John and farmer and Grace his wife.
Mary was from Wendron
The children's details were certified as correct by Charles Wilson minister of Manaccan.

Robert TAYLOR OTP Bachelor = Mary Charles STEVENS OTP Spinster by Banns 18 Apr 1825 Old Church St Pancras London Both signed witnesses Willm Foster and Anna Foster.
Mary Charles STEPHENS was baptised Helston 18 Jan 1797 parents Thomas and Elizabeth
Robert TAYLOR was baptised Manaccan 2 May 1802 parents John and Grace
So all agrees nicely with the immigration Records, but this is Mary STEVENS not Mary BALSOM.
Cheers Kris

Hello there Kris
Well done I knew that you would be able to find the parents of this couple who emmigrated to Australia.
It would now rule them out if Mary's maiden name was Balsom.
We shall have to wait and see now where ChrisK obtained her maiden name from.
kind thoughts Jenn

Hi re Robert and Mary, they did not come out on the Andromache, this is not them. Mary's maiden name was on her son's death Certificate is Balsom. I also have a Dr Taylor leaving Adelaide in 1839 heading back to Port Jackson, in the colony of Sydney. Have seen in the new south wales government gazette a will and codacil for a Robert Taylor in 1850. Also have seen a death notice in Dec 1899 at Coogee and Mary Taylor Nov 1899 at Waterloo, these were listed in new south wales archive records. In the 1841 census there are 2 Robert Taylor living in Sydney area, this information still needs looking up at LDS. Have also looked up Sands directory but by then there are a few Taylor's living in the colony of Sydney. I am thanking those that have done research so far, I also believe that they may have come out on the Dorset from England, but at this stafe cannot prove it. thanks again for any help. Hi again, forgot to add, that on his son Albert's marriage certificate, his father Robert is listed as a surgeon and on his death certificate (Albert) his father is a doctor. Have found info for surgeons and doctors who qualified in ENgland and have found a couple of Roberts, but am not too sure if it is him. Also there is the possibility he came out unassisted as have not found any records on assisted immigration listings. Unless he was a ships surgeon, and have not been able to find him on any ships so far. thanks again for any help. Christine
