Cowan Hamilton Millar
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 14:51 UTC (UK) »

My Grandfather was born in Ballymena in 1886-1887.  I'm trying to find out if I can find the family home in Ballymena(if it still exists) when I visit Ireland (UK)in May, 2010.  Still have not got a copy of his birth certificate, but am working on it so I can find out who his parents were (also born in Ireland according to the ship's info he came over to USA in 1908).  Can anyone tell me how to go about getting info like this?

Welcome to Rootschat. Ballymena is in County Antrim and I was there on Saturday.
Cowan MILLAR birth July/Sept.1882 Ballymena registration district volume 1 page 85
'Ballymena' can refer to the town or the surrounding area but birth certificate will give exact place of birth as well name parents.
Index to civil registrations here:

Details on ordering N.I. certificates here:
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,383526.0.html
1908 passenger manifest lists brother H? Millar so it's possible parents were deceased but can't be sure.

I tried the Civil Registration reference and entered in a number of different years, then limited to birth info & each time came back with nothing.
There is another guy who searches documents in Ireland and he told me to go to Dublin to 2 separate buildings, page # etc. where I can pick up his Birth Certificate---but I would like to have info before on exactly where he was born and name of parents before I go to Ireland in May.  Tried the next reference you mentioned at rootchat & got zip again.  Don't know what I am doing wrong??

There are some tricks for searching civil index which we've discovered since it came online.
On search page enter only the first and last name (use M' instead of Mc) then click 'search'
This next page is where you start to filter out the results if needed. Use the options top left (date, place, event, etc.) one by one until you find what you are looking for.

Another route to go down would be the 1901 census. It's due to be put online around the turn of the year;maybe before, maybe after but certainly long before May.That would at least tell you where Cowan lived in 1901 and if he was still living at home with his parent's;hopefully he was because it would make thing's a lot easier.

The 1901 census sounds very promising, thanks for the tip.  I did find him in San Francisco in the 1910 census 2 yrs before my Father was born. Lost all track of him in 1914, 2 yrs after my Father was born.  Eventually I'm hoping to find a death record too.
