CHISHOLM/ELLIOT
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 16:57 UTC (UK) »

I am wondering if someone has already carried out some research on the Chisholm & Elliot family that I am interested in.

Jane Cairns (ms Chisholm) was married to James Cairns.
Jane died 1/8/1891 aged 83 at Lanton Mill Farm near Jedburgh.   Her death certificate indicates that her father was Andrew Chisholm (gamekeeper - deceased) and mother Catherine Chisholm m s Elliot).   Census results indicate that Jane was born at Roberton in Roxburghshire.

Now this is fine until I try to find out about Andrew and Catherine Chisholm and I am presuming that they are the people I found on the 1841 Census living at Kirkton near Hawick

They are: -

Andrew Chisholm 65 Carrier
Catherine 60
Andrew 40 Pensioner
Thomas 30
Catherine Anderson 15

In the 1851 Census there is

Catherine Chisholm 72 Pauper  Born Ewes, Dumfries
Andrew Chisholm 52 Pensioner 72nd Highlanders born Roberton, Roxburghshire
Nancy Scott 20 Agricultural Labourer

As you can see Thomas has disappeared and I cannot seem to find him anywhere.
Andrew, the father has disappeared and I presume he died.

Catherine then died in January 1859 and her son Andrew died in November of the same year.   Both were buried at Borthwick Walls.

Catherine's father is listed on her death certificate as Thomas Elliot, farmer - no mother details given.
Both mother and son died at Coggs Mill near Hawick.

The person who registered Andrew's death was William Riddle (Uncle by Law).

Can anyone help me confirm that I am on the correct track or does anyone have any more information on this family?

Many thanks. Smiley

Hi Brina

There is a private member tree on Ancestry which shows for Andrew and Catherine (Elliot) the following children: Andrew b. 1798, Isobella b. 1801, Thomas b. 1804 and Jane b. 1811 - all births in Roberton, Selkirkshire. Christening for all, except Jane  Undecided show on IGI.

Can't see much else for them. Hopefully someone will connect with the names  Smiley

Many thanks Monica.   I think that this will be the correct family.

I do not have a subscription with Ancestry although I am thinking about it.

Maybe someone else has some details in the meantime.

Thanks again.
