Help with a burial in Bradford Yorkshire please?
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 18:28 UTC (UK) »

I wonder if someone can help find a death and or burial for Stainfirth Coultas please.

He was born 20 Feb 1858 in Bradford Yorkshire, married Ann Townend in 1882  In spite of 2 cousins visiting the Bradford library to look for death/burial recently we have been unable to find this information. He died in 1912 and in the poorhouse we think, in North Bierley. There was a second marriage in 1906 to a Mary Ann Ollerenshaw.

Any thoughts or ideas about what we can do next would be gratefully accepted.

Kind regards,
Jill

Hello There......

I think this is the guy you are looking for........

Stainfirth Coultas / age 54 / June qtr 1912 / North Bierley / volume 9b page 45.

If I can get it loaded ! I will have a look for him on the NBI...Some times it will, sometimes it won't.

He do's not seem to be in a Institution in 1911.

Kind Regards

thanks so much JeannieR, I really appreciate this.  Thanks so much for your help.  I'm in Australia and have limited info and skills in family history research.

It will be interesting to see if anything crops on the NBI.

Kind regards,

Hello again Jill.....

I did manage to load the NBI, but I am afraid there is nothing for your Stainfirth.....

Try this email address localstudies@bradford.gov.uk

They may be able to help you. It depends how desperate you are for the information. You can apply online for a death certificate (7gbp) at www.gro.gov.co.uk

Hi Jill,
Do you have Stainfirth in 1911 ? That might indicate where the workhouse was.
North Bierley covers a large area and I think there were several 'North Bierley' poorhouses. Some of them used burial grounds in churchyards that were in the vicinity eg. Clayton Union Workhouse (later Northern View Hospital) burials were in a communal plot at Clayton Parish Church until 1906 after that the poorhouse inmates were buried in a communal plot in Scholemoor cemetery.
The photographed cemetery ledgers at Bradford library are not easy to negotiate and you will need the exact date of death to get the best from them, they are not searchable by name and not all the cemeteries in North Bierley are on the computer. There is only one computer dedicated to the cemeteries disc and viewing times are limited so pre-book your appointment.
good luck

I've just had a quick look at 1911. Stainfirth is living in Windhill Shipley (North Bierley enumeration district). It looks like there are 2 Coultas families living in that area.

Thanks for this information Dave, I think it will be very useful for us. I agree about the information for Scholemore, I found my Grandmother, but knew her date of death, it eould have been too time ocnsuming to find otherwise. We only have  Jun quarter 1912 for Stainfirth's death and haven't been able to find a date so far.

Good advice to make an appointment, thank you, I'll do that when I come over to England in Dec/Jan.

Jill,
be aware that Windhill Shipley is on the opposite side of town to the area commonly known as North Bierley. It is an anomaly of the 1911 census that misplaces it.
Cemeteries used by residents of Shipley would not have been the same as those used by people from N. Bierley unless it was a family plot.
It depends on how valuable this information is but you could send £7 for the death cert to find exactly where Stainfirth was living at his time of death or you could get the 1911 census details for £3.50 to find where he was at that time and who was with him then use the voting registers in the library to find if he was still at the same address in 1912.

Hi Dave,

In the 1911 census Stainforth was living in 21 WILLIAM HENRY STREET SALTAIRE SHIPLEY, with his second wife, step daughter and 2 sons.

His brother James shows up as in an institution at Clayton near Bradford, which is a possibility for Stainforth I suppose, but quite far away from Saltaire.

It seems that the Bradford library don't have the records, but as you've pointed out you have to know the exact death date to find any  burial at Scholemoor which would be the closest cemetery and we can't find a death listing for him.  The name is common so the death certificate should be easy to locate, but harder from here in Australia.

Nabb Wood cemetery would be favourite for Saltaire

William Henry street is still there, part of the Titus Salts village and next to the railway station. You should be able to pick it up on Google maps birds eye view. It is off Victoria Road.

That was a good idea Dave, I just had a look on Google Maps and then Google Earth and got quite a nice aerial view of the Saltaire area.

Nabb cemetery sounds like a good place to start the search for a burial as well.  Thanks so much you've been very helpful.

I ran the name through our database http://vitaldb.moorlandit.com and got three hits; the 1861 (aged 3) and 1871 (aged 13) census in Tong, son of David and Ann, and a marriage at Calverley in 1906.
