Hello List, I am still looking for my Mary PARFITT born C.1823 Somerset.Mary was transported to Australia in 1844 but she does not appear on the 1841 census to the bext of my knowledge. I am wondering if she was in jial at census time but i do not no where to look for those listings.
Mary's convict records state her Mother was Mary, siblings John and Jane. Grandfather a military pensioner.
I would like any information on one Reuben PARFIT ON THE1841 census. His military records shows him as coming from Stoke Lane.
regards Sharkey

Hello Sharkey,
The most likely candidate I can find on Freereg is as follows:
Mary Parfitt baptised at St Giles, Laigh on Mendip, 22/04/1822, daughter of Maria PARFITT, single woman of Leigh.
There were 2 other children baptised by Maria PARFITT at Leigh and these were:
Thomas Parfit ELLISON on 20/10/1826, son of Maria PARFIT, single woman of Leigh William Parfit ELLISON on 14/09/1828, son of Maria PARFIT of Leigh, single woman.
I cannot find anything for Reuben Parfitt bc1770.
Quite a few possibles for Ann bc 1830. A Reuben born in Shepton Mallet in 1836. You can do a search on http://www.freereg.org.uk
Parfitt is still a common name in some parts of Somerset. Areas as Holcombe, Leigh on Mendip, Stoke St Michael (formerly Stoke Lane) Coleford, Cloford, Doulting and Shepton Mallet.

Hello again,
There is a death of Reuben PARFITT in Shepton Mallet RD in the March Qtr 1848. Ref is Vol 10 Page 373. It might be worth getting the certificate to see who reported the death and his place of death, age etc.

Thanks again for your interest, I am ordering the death certificate as suggested.
Mariah Parfitt sounds likely, if only I could find a John and a Jane but I have spent hours today on Ancestry but no luck. Mary had two children when she arrived in Australia, the father named as Josh Halliday. I can't find him either or the birth of the girls. I suspect this family may have flown under the radar on the shady side of the law. regards Sharon

Hello Sharon,
Do you know the names and ages of the 2 children of Mary Parfitt?
You may be interested to know that there is a book on Stoke St Michael, formerly Stoke Lane, it was in Frome Museum and cost about £8. It contained a lot of photos and the history of the place and people who lived there.
I did look for a John and Jane who could be siblings of Mary. The most likely candidates were in Cloford. There was a family headed by Joseph PARFITT. I can send details if you want them.
I think that I have seen the name of HALLIDAY/HOLLIDAY in the Cloford registers. I will check.
I also found the burial of Reuben PARFITT on Freereg. He was buried in Stoke Lane, St Michael, on 24/10/1847, aged 77.
There are other burials there and one for a John PARFITT on 12/08/1852, aged 23.

Hi Jo,
Mary had two children when she arrived in Tasmania, one born on board. She stated that Josh Halliday was the father of her children. Married women were often transported under their maiden names but I can't find an marriage of a Mary Parfitt to a Halliday so I doubt it happened.
One of the children was Sophie(a) died in 1846 aged 2. The fate and name of the other child is not known. Mary had another illegitimate child Elisabeth born in 1847 who also died in the Queen's orphanage in 1848.
The working on the Convict Indent is not clear and there is, I guess, a possibility that the reference to "on on board" means she left one child behind in England. However the indent had number of childrern "1" overwritten with a 2 so our original theory is more likely.
I have posted off a request for Reuben's death certificate.
regards Sharon

Hello Sharon,
I noticed that Mary Parfitt had a few criminal convictions, 1838 onwards. She must have spent some time in prison I should think. Any idea if they have prison records in the RO?
The name of Halliday/Holliday is common in the Frome area. There is a website for the Frome Group http://www.gomezsmart.myzen.co.uk I have seen this name in other parish registers and will try to recall which ones.
The siblings might hold the key but Parfitt is such a common name in those parts.
There is a marriage of a Reuben Parfit in London on the IGI. In view of his army service I wouldn't discount this.
08/08/1798 Reuben PARFIT to Miriam MOORE, St Martin in the Fields.

Hi again, I am excited - I just found a Mary Parfitt, aged 21, in The General Penetentiary, Westminster(Millbank ?) on the 1841 census, not born in Middlesex. She was, I think it reads, a Staymaker. On her convict indent she was a shoe binder and artificial flower maker so its not too much of a flight of fancy to see using her nimble hands making stays. On 7 July 1839, Mary was sentenced to 10 years transportation. My guess is that she was at Millbank awaiting transportation. I have no idea why the sentence was not carried out and how and when she returned to Bath.
Question - how do I get the records from the Gaol - are there lists etc. I have googled and looked in the National Archives site but nothing jumps out at me. regards Sharon

Hello Sharon,
The National Archives site has quite a bit on tracing criminal ancestors and prisoners. Not easy to navigate round this though.
I noticed that it states "The Convict Group of the Western Australian Genealogical Society have produced a microfiche index to those prison registers found in PCOM 2, relating to Millbank, Pentonville, Portland, Portsmouth and Newgate and hulks....". " The fiche is arranged by surname of convict and gives the full PCOM 2 reference".
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=120&j=1
I think that The National Archives will hold the lists in answer to your question.

Hello again,
I found Mary PARFITT in the 1841 at the General Penitentiary. It looks a distinct possibilty for your Mary to me.
According the The National Archives site, records for Millbank (Westminster Penitentiary) are held 1816-1871 and are at PCOM 2 /139-40.

Jo, You are a gem. I have contacted the National Archives but they sent me their research rules and I'll have to get an independent researcher in the UK to look for me - UNLESS of course, the WA FHS can search for me. I can go to the Mitchell Library here in Sydney when I get a day off and look at the Australian JointCopying project records too.
I feel it MUST be her but proof is needed. Still excited Sharon

Hello Sharkey,
The details of Joseph PARFITT and family on the 1841 census are as follows:
Parish of Cloford.
Joseph PARFITT, aged 45, Farmer, born in county. Ann PARFITT, aged 45, born in county. Joseph PARFITT, aged 20, born in county. Thomas PARFITT, aged 20, born in county. Jane PARFITT, aged 18, born in county. Fanny PARFITT, aged 15, born in county. Susan PARFITT, aged 12, born in county. John PARFITT, aged 8, born in county. Frederick PARFITT, aged 5, born in county.
On the 1851 the family is:
Joseph PARFITT widower, aged 60, Farmer of 68 acres, children and staff, born Cloford. Thomas PARFITT, son, unm, aged 35, Farmer, born Cloford. Jean PARFITT, daughter, unm, aged 33, born Cloford. William BALL, grandson, aged 7, scholar, born Alley Street. Mary Ann BALL, granddaughter, aged 5, born Alley Street.
Though it is shown as Jean PARFITT on the census, I suspect this was Jane.
The BALL family were local to that area too.
Joseph was on the 1861 census with family too. All born Cloford.
Joseph PARFITT head, widower, aged 70, Farmer of 100 acres 1 man. Thomas PARFITT, son, unm, aged 45 Farmer's son. Jane PARFITT, daug, unm, aged 43, Farmer's daug. Harriett, daug, unm, aged 33, Farmer's daug. John PARFITT, unm, aged 31, Farmer's son. Frederick PARFITT, aged 25, Farmer's son.
Joseph bc1791 is not on the 1871.
The Cloford Parish Registers are online and you would be able to find the actual baptisms etc. Let me know if you want the link.
