Richard Palmer - Saddle and Harness Maker 1830
« on: Thursday 08 October 09 08:01 UTC (UK) »

My particular Dead End is Richard Palmer.

He was convicted of house breaking at the Lent 1830 Warwick Assizes in and transported aboard the Burrell to Australia aged 18. His "Native Place" was Birmingham.

His occupation is listed as "Saddle and Harness Maker". Does anyone know of where I could find apprenticeship records that may list him?

If anyone can help me trace him I would be incredibly grateful,

You may be aware of this but there is no Richard Palmer listed b.1812 B'ham.
The only place I'm aware of that hold apprentice papers is B'ham Central Library.
They may charge you for looking.

Thanks Jim,

I've sent off an email to the library and am crossing my fingers.

I haven't found any birth records for him, as you say - but I was wondering - is there a particular site or source you used to be sure?

I know that Suffolk has things like the Suffolk Burial index, is there something similar for births in Birmingham/Warwickshire?

In later life, after being given his ticket of leave, he changed his name to Joseph Chambers, and I thought I'd try combinations of the two names if there was an easy way of checking.

IGI has B'ham pretty well covered for this period.1830 was pre Industrial Revolution & hadn't yet seen the large influx of people so there was still only a few Parishes around which are all listed on IGI.Richard Palmer may not have been his real name or he may not have been Christened or may have been born somewhere else.Without any qualifying info from censuses etc. it's difficult to see how to proceed.I think apprentice papers is probably a good lead.
The only other lead may be from newspapers but this would mean searching the local press at the Library I'm afraid.
