Merchant Navy
« on: Thursday 08 October 09 09:13 UTC (UK) »

I'm not sure if this is the right board for the Merchant Navy, but does anyone know of any searchable websites for information on members of the MN.

My father in law was a member, but we have no records and I'd like to try and find out more about his service records.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes.

I would need a name, date and place of birth to start you off. Alternately make a post on Mercantile Marine http://www.mercantilemarine.org/

Hi Hugh

The man in question is Reynold REES, born 12 October 1901 at 72 Blythe Road, Stratford, Essex.

Hope this is enough information for starters.

I will also look at the website link you sent.

Many thanks.

Hello Jan,
There are no primary records for him online but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Depending when he left the MN will determine where his records are filed. Do you know when he left the sea?

Hi Hugh

Thank you for making the initial search online for me.

We know nothing about Reynold's time in the MN apart from the fact that he once told my husband that he was torpedoed on the way home from a stint at sea.

However, I have Reynolds Regular Army papers which show that he enlisted in 1919 - had an army education at home for 2 years and eventually was sent to Cawnpore, India in March 1922.  Apart from a few home leaves, he remained in the Regular Army until 1934.

Is it possible he could have joined the MN before he was 18 or indeed while he was "at home" between enlisting in the Regular Army and his first tour in India in 1922?

Could I also ask you if it would be possible to do a primary online search for a Charles Edwin Fagg who was, apparently a schoolfriend of Reynolds, who may have spent time in the MN.  I understand that Charles Edwin Fagg was born in Deptford in 1900.

Best wishes

Hello Jan,
The torpedoing is interesting, what we don't know is which war. He could have served in the MN in the latter part of WWI then gone on to the Army in 1919 but it is also feasable that he could have joined the MN during WWII.

If he served in the MN prior to 1941 then he may have records in the Fourth Register of Seamen. The original cards are held at Southampton City Archives and you may like to have a read of this:  http://www.mercantilemarine.org/showthread.php?t=1622&highlight=central+index

Any MN service from Jan 1941 will be recorded in the Fifth Register of Seamen held in file classification BT 382 at Kew.

No primary records online either for C E Fagg but again that doesn't mean there aren't any. It just means digging a little deeper to find them.

If you dont get any more replies here try Mercantile Marine

Hi again  Hugh

Many thanks for that link.

I have just e-mailed CLIP and volunteered for online transcribing which will keep me occupied during the winter months out here in France, when it's too darned cold to do anything else.  If I can help others while doing my own research, I will always give it a shot.

Best wishes.
