There is another IGI submitted record for George THORNHILL, born 1783, Diddington, died 19 May 1852, with quite a lot of info including his parents.
Georges parents; George THORNHILL Mary Annie HAWKINS
Mary was the daughter of Sir Ceasar Hawkins.
If this is all correct there is quite a lot of info on him if you "google" him.

He gives Hemingford as his birthplace in censuses, although Diddington is only 5 miles away.
Hemingford Abbots' baptisms are on the IGI although I'm not convinced that it's complete as it's mainly females, but there are no Thornhills. Hemingford Grey isn't on the IGI, nor has it filmed by the LDS so it would take a trip to Huntingdon Records office to see if he appears
Diddington parish register is on the BVRI, but strangely the only child of George and Charlotte Matilda Thornhill to be baptised there was Henry Jordan Thornhill on 22 Aug 1832. I wonder where those member submissions got their data from?

Bonjour David
As they were quite a prominent family is it possible they were private baptisms? And these entries were taken from a Family Bible?
1841 Census St George Hanover Square,Middlesex HO107/733/5/St George Hanover Square
Mary THORNHILL, 50, yes Mary Ann..., 30, no Charles, 25, no LYDIA..., 20, no GEORGINA, 15, no
Obviously they keep 2 houses Hunts/London. Cant find Bryan 1841 (away in Army?) or parents (overseas?)
1861 Cenus Charlotte is back in St George Hanover Square with unmarried daughters. Birth palce now St Fers, Hunts RG9/43/6/5

G'day Trish
I see the entry on the IGI for Henry Jordan Thornhill is a birth on 25 July 1832, which would tie in with a baptism on 22 August. So it does look as though the submitter had access to some private papers. Not sure about private baptisms though, as these are usually then entered into the parish register, with a note "privately".

Hi David,
Thank you for that info
I just noticed Paul is from New Zealand in his profile. Whilst googling for Thornhill info I found this which may or may not be related; "google" Janus, Letters from the Thornhill Family in New Zealand.
There are also papers from the Thornhill Collection held in the Hunts Archives. The last Thornhill ( Noel) died without issue in 1956 and the papers donated. The Thornhills originated in Fixby, Yorkshire and arrived in Diddington abt 1730. They held estates and houses in ; Boxwith, Cambridgeshire Dowdyke Hall, Lincolnshire Oxfordshire, Huntingdon, Offord Darcy, Southoe, Duloe London, Bread St, Holloway, Angel Islington
A fitting posting for my 3000th as I have no Gentry in my line
Cheers, Trish

Trish,
I had a look into the meaning of "No Cure of Souls" (next to your post for William Thornhill in 1851) and found the following:
"The man concerned was a cleric or clergyman of the Church of England. He held the educational qualification of "Master of Arts" (A.M.; or today often termed M.A.) and was therefore most likely a graduate of Oxford or Cambridge University. "No Cure of souls" means that he was not at that time appointed to a position in any parish; either as a Curate, Vicar etc. To hold a "Cure of souls" is to have the care of souls - to be in spiritual charge of parishioners."
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DEVON/1999-11/0942310772
The article then refers to some published alumni lists for Cambridge and sure enough it is online and I found William.

Has a lot of good info, including birth/death date, who he married etc.
