Hi Ruth,

I have been trying to unravel your Robert Stapleton puzzle.

At the 1841 Census (HO107/894/6/folio 10/page 14) there is a Robert Stapleton aged 1 with parents Robert aged 25 and Sarah aged 30 and siblings Eliza aged 5 and George aged 2 months. Also living with them are Mary Stapleton aged 20, John Bingham aged 12 and Elizabeth Bingham aged 5. (1841 adult ages rounded down to nearest 5 years)

In all likelihood George's birth is recorded in June Quarter 1841 Oakham Vol 15,  pg 672 and his death also in June Quarter 1841 Oakham Vol 15, pg 450.

At the 1851 Census there is a Robert Stapleton born Greetham aged 11 in the Oakham Workhouse (HO107/2092/folio 247/page 47) and his sister Eliza aged 15 is a servant with the Jenkins family also in Oakham.
Given these details I suspect Robert and Sarah died between 1841 and 1851.

There are several potential candidates in Free BDM death records in this period

Robert Stapleton
December Quarter 1844, Uppingham Vol 15, Pg 480
March Quarter 1847, Uppingham Vol 15, Pg 597

Sarah Stapleton
December Quarter 1843, Stamford Vol 14, Pg 391
March Quarter 1846, Oakham Vol 15, Pg 461
June Quarter 1846, Stamford Vol 14, Pg 381

I could not see any other records for Robert and Sarah Stapleton in Uppingham Parish Register microfiche. (my burials only go to 1843).

Like you I could not locate a birth record for Robert junior nor could I detect his whereabouts in 1861 Census.

Regards and good luck with your quest

hi there, thank you so much for your time spent, head of house robert married sarah in oakham in 1840,sarah died in 1846,robert remarried a jane busby that same year.robert no cert proof died in 1865.eliza on the 1841 census was the illigtimate daughter of mary stapleton age 20 on census eliza was babtized 17 may 1836 in greetham, george was the son of robert and sarah  and babtized in greetham 1841.so where does my robert fit in as i said no registration for him you were correct on your findings of him on the census, was he the child of mary? i think mary possibly died late 1840s so perhaps that is why he is in the workhouse,i know robert joined the army in 1857 we can find him in aldershot on the 1871 census he was posted to dublin where he met and married in 1867 on his marriage cert he states his father as john stapleton occupation a baker.there is only one john death in the oakham area in 1840 got the cert but he was far to old being 83 at time of death.so as you can see i need roberts babtism to go any further finding his origin cottesmore, empingham and greetham parishs hve been checked no result, you say you have buriels up to 1843 would you be so kind to perhaps check for a buriel for john stapleton around roberts birth 1840 maybe that would help.sorry if ive rambled but you know how frustrating research can be ;)thank you again any help appriciated. warmest regards ruth
