Work of national importance?
« on: Thursday 08 October 09 18:21 UTC (UK) »

Just been informed that a gt uncle of mine who was imprisoned on the Isle of Man during WW2 (Italian - in the alien camp) was ''directed to do work of national importance'' in Huddersfield after the war - he apparently didn't return home to South Wales until 1947/1948

He didn't have any particular skills, he was just a cafe worker who subsequently trained to be a baker/confectioner whilst in Huddersfield - would anyone have any idea what exactly would have been going on in that area around that time  Huh

Not sure if it's exactly the answer, but a look at the following web page might give you part of the answer:

http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1945/dec/13/labour-control-government-decisions

The government kept a close control over labour immediately after the war, I think that they were trying to ensure that the situation which followed the 1st WW didn't happen again and also the country was in a real economic mess and, after 6 years of government controls, regulating the labour market was an easy decision to take.

Thank you very much - myself and the son of the gentleman concerned were both a bit confused as to why an Italian cafe worker would be doing work of national importance.

Given that he trained as a baker/confectioner, he was probably involved in increasing the food supplies with all the rationing, etc (I assume!).

I'll pass this onto his son
