Location of a regiment 1833-4
« on: Friday 09 October 09 05:07 UTC (UK) »

After many years, with emphasis on the many! I have had a breakthrough finding details of my great grandfathers life, My question is how of from where can I obtain the details where the battalions of the 9th regiment  (I am assuming that the 9th regiment was the 9th of foot, the Norfolk Regiment?)  was stationed August 1833 and May 1834. What has set me on this track is an entry from the Civil Service Evidence of Age which states that my great grandfathers father was a soldier in the 9th regiment, what is suprising is that 110 years later his 2x great grandson, me! also served in the Royal Norfolks.
Also great grandfathers death certificate stated as well as being a civil service pensioner he was also a army pensioner, I discounted that entry about the army as I thought no one born 1834 could be a pensioner before 1866, now wrong can one be as the CSE of A entry also tells me my great grandfather was a private in the 30th regiment prior to signing the affidavit regarding his DOB and POB.
The CSA of A entry obtained from the SOG was money well spent.
Thank you   Dennis

9th foot was stationed in Mauritius during that period, with its reserve companies in Ireland (Fermoy and Youghal)

That's sort of ruined a good theory, on the CSE of A affidavit I have for my great grandfather he states that there are no birth or baptismal records of his birth but to the best of his knowledge he was born at Headford Co Galway on the 2nd May 1834 and his father was a soldier in the 9th regiment, now it is a fair hike from those two places where the reserve was stationed to Headford and even further from Mauritius!! more head scratching required but thanks a lot.    Dennis

9th Lancers were at Newbridge at that time - that's another possibility.

Hi Dennis

He may not have been in the 9th Foot at the time of his son's birth. Do you have a name for the soldier?

PS..I am confused now...what is this about 30th Regiment? Can you just give names(s) against regiment(s) with DoB if known.

Sorry for the delay I have been walkabout, My information comes from an affidavit that my ancestor signed when he was I guess applying for a job in the Civil Service on the 27th March 1866, at that time he was staying in Middlesex, it states " I Michael Patrick Higgins ( he used to use the names just Patrick or Patrick Michael as well) of etc late private #3104 in the 30th Regiment do etc to the best of my knowledge and belief I was born in the parish of Headford in the County of Galway on the 2nd May 1834 and at the  time of my birth my father was a soldier in the 9th Regiment and that I made application to the captain commanding the depot of that regiment to ascertain whether my birth was recorded in any of the regimental books but am informed by him that no entry can be found relating to my birth or baptism" Not much to go on?
When Patrick married in 1866 he listed his father as Michael Higgins a stonemason
In the 1911 census of Portsmouth he listed his POB as Headford Galway and his occupation as Army Pensioner that bit is wrong as it appears he left after 12 years service but at his death he was listed as Civil Service and Army Pensioner.
One thing strikes me about this affidavit is the signature, the handwriting is perfect. curly bits and i's dotted
I would at the best expected a scrawl or even a mark.

Thank you Dennis.
PS All of this is a great advance all I knew before this was that when I threw a tantrum as a child many many years ago it used to be blamed on my Irish ancestors

Hi Dennis

You will need to visit Kew (or employ a researcher) and look at the muster book (WO12) for the 9th for 1834-35 to see if a Michael Higgins is recorded. If as Shaun says the main force was overseas there should be a separate muster book for the Depot left in Ireland. It will record where each man on the 1st of each month.

Unfortunately the army did not record a soldier's family then so the best you can do is search forwards and backwards in case his first/last entires give his place of birth and/or age on enlistment. If not you will have to see where the recruiting sergeants where when he joined, and carry on the search using parish registers there, and enroute back to the Depot.

When researching muster books it is important that you look in all sections as men were often recorded more than once. For example, at this time, when a man reached 7- and 14-years service they are listed in a special section that gives more information.
