I have a Henry EVANS,[1797-1869]who in the 1851 census was a "Superannuated Boatman",with H.M;Customs.
He was residing at Willington Quay,Northumberlandshire in 1851.
I have his ancestory. He was born in Pembrokeshire.
In the 1861 census he was in Milford Haven,Pembs;
He died there in 1869.
I have him as a "Mariner"in 1841 at Milford Haven.
I am looking for his Career in the H.M;Customs.
Can anyone look him up for me in Kew Please?
Many Thanks,
Graham.

Hi Graham,
a warm welcome to rootschat.
I have typed into Google Henry Evans/HM Customs.
and up came a website you may wish to check out.

http://www.anglefire.com/ga/BobSanders/SEAMEN.html

(I have copied the website down but cannot link to in so if you are having problems then maybe just Google for it)

on the site it mentions a Henry Evans
Cardiff 1883-39 HM customs.
A long shot but maybe worth checking out,
regards,
Billy.

Graham - there's a "boatman" in my OH's family - he was with the coastguard from the 1820s to the 1840s - at that time the coastguard covered "excise" type work. The National Archives have many coastguard records for this period as free downloads - they are large pdf files of the records - I was able to trace the service of this ancestor around England & Ireland for over 20 years in these. The National Archives links for coatguards is

There are also links on that page for Customs officers & Excise officers

My thanks to those who answered my Query.
I am uncertain if my Henry EVANS was a "Coastguard?".
I have him as a "Blacksmith" in 1861,at Milford Haven,& H.M;Customs"in the 1851 census,at Willington Quay,Northumberland.And just a "Mariner" in 1841 at Milford Haven.
His grandson who was William COULTHARD was born at Willington Quay in 1854.[He Died in Barry South Wales in 1917.]
Henry EVANS died at Hubberston,Milford Haven in 1869 aged 74.
He was my Great,Great,Great,Grandfather.
Graham.
