Hmmm !

Being that early you cant get any certificates.

Perhaps the mother was just assumed to be the wife of Richard Nunn and her pre married name was of no worth to record in the baptism registers ?

Have you searched registers of marriages before the birth of the child, to see if you can find their marriage ?  That seems the best bet to me ... but maybe someone else will have a better idea !

The IGI has  a mariage for Richard Nunn b. 1789 to a Grace in 1812 ... but that's not what you are seeking !

i tried going to the devon records office looking thru their fisch for the marriage but could not see anything but i was not sure if i was looking at the right year.  They were so busy up there when i went i did not want to disturb them and ask for help. What sort of date do i start searching from do you think and i will make another trip to the records office.

I think you have to assume they were married before the child was born ... but they might not have been !    Shocked

I dont know the Devon record office, but if you phoned before you went and explained what you want to look up, they will be very helpful, and be prepared to give you time ... ask what time is the least busy, and go then.   But they are paid to be disturbed, so dont be shy !

You should search the marriage records from after the son was born, to, say 15 years before ?

It was typical for a baptism record to only state the father's full name and mother's forename. Very few priests would record the mother's maiden name on a baptism. (The parish of Brixton, Devon being the exception).
The Devon FHS can provide marriage indices 1754-1837 by surname, which should help to determine the surname of Richard's wife.
However, if you consult http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Blackawton/index.html you will find a link to Ray Osborn who has Blackawton parish registers and provides free look-ups.
