Death of Edward Smith ?Sheffield
« on: Friday 09 October 09 18:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I'm trying to find a death of  Edward Smith b.1863.In the 1911 Census he was living in Sheffield with his wife Sarah  [Flanagan]Smith.
On his son's marriage certificate 1916 it states he is deceased.
Sarah his wife dies 10 Jan 1917 at her daughters residence Smithy Hill Bradwell.
I think after his death the wife would have moved to be with her daughter and that Edward had probably died in Sheffield. This is only supposition though and I welcome any ideas or help with this one.
Thank you

Hi Lizzie

I have had a look at the deaths between 1911 and 1916 for Sheffield and there is only one aged abt 26 so he is not yours.

Can you tell me which registration district Sarah died in please?

Hi Lizzie

I don't know Derbyshire too well, which registration district was Bradwell in? It should say on Sarah's death certificate.

According to GenUKI, Bradwell was in Bakewell R.D.

What was this couple's address in 1911? (and what was Edward's occupation?).

Hi

I have looked at the Derbyshire registration districts according to genuki for Derbyshire and the only one that look anywhere near was

Edward W Smith age 46 abt 1865 Tamworth 6b 636 1911 Q3

However they may not have been in Derbyshire at all Undecided

In addition to what Hugh asked for can you also give his son's address at time of marriage please, it might help to narrow down an area.

Hi Hugh and Evie
Edwards son also Edward married Poplar London so no help there, however I have the following details from the 1911 Census
Living at
Court9 3House Pearl St
Sheffield Ecc Bier
Sub-District Sharrow
were Edward and his wife Sarah. He was listed as an out of work Comb Cutter
With them were the following children
William[18] Pocket Knife Weller
Edward[14] Cutler pocket Knife
Edith[11] Scholar
Albert Victor[5]Scholar

I have a copy of a photo of Edward with some of his grandchildren taken at his daughter Agnesand Son-in-law Albert Woolhouse's house .In 1911 the Woolhouses lived on Landsdowne Rd, a boarder with them was Edward's son and Agnes's brother James Smith
Hope this helps and is not too confusing
Thank you

I have drawn a blank with the published burial indexes.

I think that Albert WOOLHOUSE's mother Emily (Emma?) is buried in the General Cemetery, Sharrow in a public grave in the non-consecrated part of the cemetery. (died 1926) (the transcription of the consecrated part for this period is not yet available).

It is likely that William SMITH in 1911 was a "pocket knife *wetter*".

It may be useful to know when searching that 'Lansdowne' is spelled thus, with one 'd'.

Hi Hugh
Thank you for looking anyhow.I put off looking for this part of my family purely because of the name Smith but I've been more successful than any of my other research names.Edward however has been my "brick wall" His son Edward was the "Black Sheep" of the family with a chequered military life a dodgy marriage emigration to Australia and at each stage lies abounded so maybe at his marriage his deceased father might have been just wishful thinking on his behalf.
Thanks again

Hi Lizzie

Was William married before Edward? If so do you have Willaim's marriage certificate?

I was thinking that if for example William married 1913 and Edward was alive, it would help shorten the time span to look for a death for his father.

Hi Evie
It was a good idea but sadly William was killed WW1 before any chance of marriage. On the certificate however dated May1915 it states son of Edward and Sarah living 31 Campo Lane Sheffield.
This would appear to shorten the timescale but I still cant find a fit with his Birth date which I have so I know this is correct.
The only thing I can think now is he perhaps used another Christian nameor name he was knownTed etc or son Edward lied or was mistaken about his death when he married
Thank you
