Ann Ferguson 1855-18??
« on: Friday 09 October 09 23:13 UTC (UK) »

I have reached a dead end (maybe literally!)

My paternal Great-Grandfather (Watson Ferguson) appears to have maaried a lady by the name of Ann Ward on 21st May 1877.

Both show as 22 years old at the time of marriage. They were married in Thornaby Parish Church and I have a certified copy of the certificate.

Now he later married (14th August 1883) my Great-grandma (Sarah Ann nee. Priest) in Thornaby Registry Office.

On this certificate it states that Watson was a widower...but I can find no record of Ann Ferguson (nee Ward) passing away. I have searched for Ward and Ferguson but nothing so far matches.

I did find an Ann Ferguson who passed away June 1880 which would be good, but for the fact it states she was 43 which is a lot older than the 25 years old I was expecting.

Any suggestions on where to turn? I could order the death certificate for the 43 year old Ann as a start I suppose.

Thoughts?

Hello,

Do you have him in 1881? There is a William Ferguson married to Jane and they have an Elizabeth Ward, mother in law with them  Huh

The registration district is Middlesborough and the only death I can see though is Jane Ferguson 31 yrs March quarter 1883. On- looking at the date of their marriage - it would fit. ( a bit quick but who are we to judge  Wink)

on the 1891 watson occ is labourer in iron foundry he is aged 37 born in hartlepool there is a 10 year old child john ferguson with him
born in north ormesby
on the 1881 there is a william and jane as heywood as said(they are in ormesby)
williams occ matches watsons in 1891
there is also a brother john james ferguson aged 23 born hartlepool with william in 1881
did watson have a brother that matches the age and name on the brother with william in 1881?

i see on the 1861 census watson with his mother ann
also there is a 3 year old brother john james ferguson

so to add up william and jane that heywood found appears to be your couple

Thank you. I shall check out those leads.

Watson has been an absolute pain to track down, mainly because his name seems to change. It is Walter on the register and yet the birth cert says Watson quite clearly.

I had trouble with the Ferguson leg of my tree right from the get go. My grandfather was listed under the wrong spelling of his surname! Oh well, at least I have got him now.

Thanks for the leads I will let you know how they pan out.
