naval uniform
« on: Friday 09 October 09 23:33 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Can anyone direct me to a site which shows naval uniforms in 1854.

My man entered on the Calcutta so I think this is royal navy.

Regards

HMS Calcutta wasn't in service in 1854....

But this ship was....

SS Calcutta, and she went to Sydney in 1854

Hi Scrimnet,

Thanks for the post, I am confused now!  I have a printout from archives for my man entering Continuous and General service and it say the ship in which he entered Calcutta  ADM/139/154 ,do you think it could be a mistake?

Well....HMS Calcutta appears to be out of the running....

In 1855 the ship had been in reserve, but was recommissioned for the war between Russia and Britain and sailed for the Baltic. After two months she was sent home again, as being useless for modern naval actions.

She saw action in the Second Opium War as the flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Michael Seymour, under the command of Captain William King-Hall. In 1858 Calcutta visited Nagasaki where she stayed for one week, becoming the first ship-of-the-line to visit Japan

The SS Calcutta appears to be the only fit with 1854 and Oz...

Have a chat with the National Maritime Museum (email of course!)? Perhaps they can shed some more light on this for you....

Or perhaps one of the RC Naval buffs can come up trumps tomos...

Watery stuff isn't really my thing... Wink Grin
