PETER-BILLING Update COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 08:39 UTC (UK) »

For anyone interested, here is an update to my previous requests for info. on Richard PETER & parentage.
Postal request to Cornwall Record Office (who have my grateful thanks) has resulted in confirmation that Richard PETER was the third son of John PETER of East Illand, North Hill, d 1846, m 1803 Mary HENDER. Richard was b Bodmin 9 Oct 1809 and m Anne Sophia SMITH in 1847.
They found this in an entry in "Collectanea Cornubiensis by G. C. Boase" which also included a brief history of his achievements in Launceston.
They also sent me a copy of the original baptism record on which his surname had been mis-spelt as PETTER.
Still haven't found a link to BILLING family so may not exist.
Best regards to all who took an interest.

Good afternoon from Cornwall

My name is David HOLMAN and I am probably the solution to most of your questions.

I am researching the PETER tree in Cornwall, specifically the North Hill family.

They link into the tree of Richard PETER born 1809 (The Historian).

I have a tree back to the 16th Century but the last few generations are presumed, but I can link it into most of the people you mention.

I cannot, yet however, link it into the tree of PETER of Harlyn.

There is almost certainly a link but it is 16th century or earlier and thus difficult to prove.

The names of Richard PETER's family, Otho, Lynton, Apsley, Kenelm Bathurst etc are found in many parts of the tree of the Harlyn Family.

At a family History Conference last year I met up with Baron PETRE of Ingatestone, Essex.  The names also occur in his family and although he was aware of me, and my research he couldn't confirm an absolute link.  Richard the Historian knew of the family and may have named his children as a tribute to the family that he felt he was connected to.

His book mentions them but does not provide a positive link.

I have a copy of his book and have typed up most of it into word.  His research contains some inaccuracies that can be revealed with modern research methods and in particular the Cornwall FHS Database.

If you would like more information, please email me at
Best wishes

Hi David,
Thanks for your message. I would love to exchange information with you outside this "look-up" message board but as the moderator says, we have to use the secure "Personal message" board to exchange email addresses, and have to have made 3 posts before the PM can be used. If you reply to this message you will have made 3 posts and we can then exchange email addresses using PM.

I have managed to get back to Thomas PETER born c. 1597 by making a few educated guesses.  My current problem, arising from contact with a nice lady in Australia (related to the John PETER who went to Australia) revolves around John Peter b 1777. as follows:-
I have only managed to find one John PETER born/baptized around this date 1777 so assumed he had to be the one married to Mary HENDER in 1803, subsequently giving birth to Richard (the Historian) in 1809.
I have now confirmed (Cornwall OPC records) the Australian information that a John PETER - Yeoman of Lewannick - married a Mary Brown at Poughill 18 May 1801.
Which one of these two JP's has Robert PETER & Jane WEVILL as parents? and where did the other come from? or do we have a bigamist?

If you can offer any further help on this matter using this public forum I would very pleased to hear it.
We can then exchange emails and continue more detailed discussions without boring all the other RootsChat members.

Look forward to your reply
Best Wishes, Bob L. (South Wales UK)
