Wilfred Chambers of Galston - Freemason

My distant relative, Wilfred Thomas Chambers was born in 1875 to a poor mining family in Nottinghamshire. He followed the same line in the mines certainly until 1904, still living in Bulwell, Nottingham.

I now know soon after this he was made a freemason in Galston, Ayrshire.
A son was born in Galston in about 1909 - Willis Ronald Chambers (died 1990)

By 1911 census he is back in Bulwell, Nottingham running a Grocer and Confectioners (Dealer-own account) and when he died in 1924 was running a pub.

Are there any mason records available for this period that might shed some light on the occasion?

How about parish records of Willis' baptism?

I've just GoogleEarthed the place and it looks like a nice small town with a good well spread street layout. One website though describes it as a 'rathole' - seems unfair!

There is a birth record on SP for a Willis Ronald Chambers b. 1908 in Galston. You might get more information through looking at the exact record on the site.

As I doubt that you'd want to spend £6 (for 30 credits - min. purchase), on the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk website to download Wilfreds birth entry - which gives both parents names, fathers occ. and address at time of birth, there is a cheaper option.

Subscribe - at no cost to http://www.ancestralscotland.com/signup/register/

You will get 10 free credits to the SP site - you'll need a total of 6 credits to download and save the entry to your PC.  You're lucky that your ancestor has 3 names and was born in 1908 - currently the latest year you can download from.

The site giving you free credits will not spam mail you - you'll get the occasional once in a blue moon e-mail from them.
