Irish immigrants in Thame
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 12:33 UTC (UK) »

I have a Joanna Fitzgerald who married John Latchford in 1806 at St Andrew Holborn, London.  According to the 1851 and 1861 censuses (several marriages later) she said she was born at Thame, Oxfordshire ca. 1785.  She also used the names Hannah and Catherine.  I can't find any Fitzgerald christenings in Thame around this time, at least in the C of E records.

Her name as well as those of the marriage witnesses and other apparent relatives point to her being of Irish background.  Was there a history of Irish immigration in  Thame?  The 1851 census has a number of people in Middlesex with Irish names (Connor, Collins etc) who said they were born in Thame but again their details don't match up with christenings on the IGI.

I'd be most grateful for any advice.

Best wishes

Mark

Thanks Rosie - do you know if there are any Thame Catholic records?
