I am looking for a Mary Ann Lee in the 1871 census. I have her in all the others but can,t find her in this one. She should also have a daughter with her named Ann born C1870. Mary herself was born C1850 in Sheffield and in the other census,s she was in Sheffield. On her marriage certificate in 1865 she gives her age as 22yrs which conflicts with her ages in the census,s. According to the age of her in the census,s she would have only been 15yrs old when she married.( Can,t really understand this). In the 1871 census her husband was lodging at a residence in Halifax as he was a journeyman plasterer. Heeeeeeeeelp please, Regards Pat COMPLETED

Hello Pat,
Where was daughter Ann born?
Where do you expect Mary Ann and Ann to be living in 1871?

Marriage Certificate: 19th Dec 1965 St Vincents, Sheffield. John Lee age 20yrs Plasterer Journeyman .Address Court 9 Hollis Croft Sheffield. Father William Lee a labourer. Mary Ann Kelly 20yrs, spinster, address 36 Hollis Croft. Father thomas Kelly, grocers porter. Witnesses: John McDonald and Kate Lee (husbands sister) I still can,t work out the ae difference. I know I have got the right person. But why would she lie about her age, I don,t know. Mary,s maiden name was Kelly as you will see from the above. Her father was Thomas and she also had a son Thomas, who I have found living with grandparents in the 1871 census aged 4yrs

Not sure but I wonder if this may be them? RG10/4684/45/35 boarding with the Ibboston family in Howard St. Sheffield?
Mistranscribed as "daughter" but definitely "boarder" on the image.
Only thing is both are Ann Lee but I wonder if one might be your Mary Ann. She is aged 25 and young Ann is transcribed as 10 months.

Pauline the reference you gave me for the 1871 census is the one I,ve got living with his grandparent and aunties. Ruskie, I suppose it is a possibility. Shame that they told so many fibs about their ages. Or maybe then again they didn,t know so just guessed.

Well, the family seem to be boarding quite a lot, so may not have had much of a say when it came to giving the information on the censuses.
You would think that at least the 1851 and 1861 would be correct though ....

I am just trying to sort through all my paperwork for the Lee family and have just noticed that the 1871 census that ruskie suggested, boarding with the Ibbotson Family. Well looking at the full transcript for the 1901 census just above Mary A and family it looks like there is an Ibbotson family there. So Possibly Ruskie is right.
