I've been going nearly cross eyed looking at 1851 census looking for an ancestor of mine for quite a while with no luck so I hope someone can help me?
My grt grt grandmother was born Naomi/Neomi Underdown about 1843 and married 1859 with parents consent, from the marriage certificate I know her fathers name was James Underdown. Naomi/Neomi is an unusual name and I wonder if there was another name that she could have been known as? I know from some of my other branches that female first names are slightly or totally diferent.
I have a birth certificate for a Neomi b. 1843 parents James and Mary (Lawrence) Underdown. This is most likely the right birth certificate as Naomi/Neomi first child called Lawrence. But I can't find James and Mary anywhere.
I hope someone can help me?

Hi
Who did Naomi marry and where and have you found her on any later census which might give some clue as to a birthplace for her/where was the Naomi b1843 born?

Hi Rog
Not my thread, I am only going by what timetraveller has put on the lookup. As for the James and Mary part, perhaps she was the child of William and Mary and not James and Mary as Cas has posted. Timetraveller did state that they couldnt find a James and Mary Underdown . Just to put the cat amongst the pigeon's, a certain website has her parents down as William Underdown and a Caroline Lydia Smith . Or I could have given Cas the wrong info, and it wasnt the one that married a James Summers. Plus on the 1861 census there is another Naomi Underdown born 1842 ish Sussex. Will have to wait and see what Timetravller has to say

Thank you all for your help.
It's taken me many years to get this far on this branch even tho I had good evidence to start with.
I inherited the original marriage certificate and marriage card of my paternal grandparents plus copies of their birth certificates - not the original birth certificates but older than me. I also have photos of Elizabeth's parents and my late Mom said she had met them, but later research showed it was Lawrence and his second wife she met. My paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Summers born in Pembury and her father was Lawrence Summers - both her parents birth certicates give a short form of their first names and on baptism they were given the longer names. The birth certificate of Larry/Lawrence gives his parents names as James and Naomi (Underdown) Summers, census shows her name as Naomi as does her death certificate. I recently found her birth certificate as mentioned before as Neomi.
The 1851 census given by casalguidi is most probably the right one for me but another spelling variation of Nahama but that could possibly be an accent there and whoever was writing census form wrote down what he thought he heard as we all know.
I'm hoping this is the right path now for me to take with this branch and can hopefully do some more research towards finding more info on James and Mary (Lawrence) Underdown. Capel is the right area of Kent for this branch as they stayed in the area for some generations afterwards and are still there - most of them. I've now found a marriage which I'm hoping is the right one for James and Mary (Lawrence) Underdown in 1842 but it is in Malling in Kent.
Thanks again all for your help
