My GG grandfather, Thomas CARTWRIGHT, was born 1802/1803 in Coventry. His marriage certificate names his father as John CARTWRIGHT, cordwainer. In the census records, Thomas lived in St John, Coventry (Spon Street), although he married my GG grandmother in Nechells Green, Birmingham. Thomas died in Aug 1870; his burial record gives his age as 67.
IGI gives two possibilities for his christening: 1 Oct 1802 St John, parents John and Mary; 2 Feb 1803 St John, parents John and Phoebe.
If someone has access to the baptism records, I would be very grateful if you could let me know if either of these Johns are recorded as a cordwainer. Many thanks.

I am visiting Coventry Herbert HIstory Centre (Archives) on 7th November and I will look up the reference you give to find the occupation of your ancestor. Best wishes

Hello Simon I am just back from my visit to Coventry History Centre. I am sorry to tell you that the registers for the early part of 1800 do not survive. This church has been sibject to flooding at various times and this is probably the reason rather than the blitz on Coventry. Instead there are microfilms of the Bishop's Transcripts which I looked at but the filming is so inadequate they cannot be deciphered. I expect this was done in the early days of filming original documents - now the standards are usually better. I can only suggest that you apply to Lichfield Record Office where the original BTs are kept for Coventry St John. I feel sure they would probably look up one or two adjacent entries for you without charge if you write or e-mail them. Best wishes Graham

Many thanks for going to the trouble of looking for me Graham, and for the advice on the Bishop's transcripts. I'll get in touch with the Lichfield RO. Simon

Hi
I think his parents were John and Phoebe. You'll have to bear with me on this as it's a bit drawn out.
John Cartwright married Phoebe Bray 13/6/1787 at Holy Trinity Coventry.
John Cartwright married Mary Marvin 12/5/1788 St John Coventry.
John and Mary had a Marvin 1799 christening St John. (unusual name for the year)
Checking my apprenticeship enrolment disc Marvin's father is recorded as John leather dresser, there was also a John and a Thomas with father John recorded as leather dresser.
The apprenticeship records for "your" Thomas state his father is John Cordwainer, also a John and William with father as cordwainer.
If you don't get anywhere with the baptism records it might be worth looking at John and Phoebe's marriage records to see if John is recorded as a cordwainer.

Julie, thanks very much for replying to another of my queries about Thomas, and for spending time checking the apprenticeship records. Your suggestion about looking at the marriage records is a good one - there is evidence pointing to both sets of parents for Thomas. This is what I have so far:
I carried out 'parent searches' on the IGI for both John Cartwright and Mary, and John Cartwright and Phoebe. Both sets of parents have a Thomas and a John of the right age to fit your apprenticeship record findings, but there is only one William recorded, parents John and Mary.
John and Phoebe also had a son Samuel, christened 1 September 1811 at St John; in the 1841 census there is a Samuel age 29 watchmaker with his own family living in Drapers Field, Holy Trinity.
Amongst Thomas' children were a Phoebe (elder) and a Mary Frances (youngest).
So there are clues indicating either set of parents.
A cordwainer works with leather; is there a possible relationship between the occupations?
