COMPLETED: George Morton Smith
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 22:46 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,

This is my first post to RootsWeb! Here's hoping I'm following the proper etiquette...

I'd love to find some more information about my grandfather, George Morton Smith. The only thing I know about his time in Canada is what I've gleaned from the CEF attestation paper. (I've yet to order his full service record.)

He was born on 13/09/1888 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, and got married to Mabel Edith Lingham on 19/03/1909. They had a child, Eileen Smith, in March 1911, and they all appear on the 1911 UK census as living in Highbury, London. At this point he's listed as being a bank clerk.

But I don't know anything about his movements between 1911 and 1916 - by which point he has signed up to the CEF. According to his attestation paper, he was living at 69 Dagmar Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, working as a clerk. Mabel is also listed as living at this address.

These are his particulars from the CEF form:

   Name: SMITH, GEORGE MORTON
   Regimental number(s): 862067
   Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 9048 - 25
   Date of Birth: 13/09/1888

After the war he stayed in England, though I don't have much information about him until 1924, when he was working for Allied Newspapers in London.

If anyone has any suggestions where I could find more info about when he might have moved to Canada, or about his time there, I'd really appreciate it!

Alan

You can view the Passenger Lists for free at Library and Archives Canada, they just are not indexed, but when you know the name of the ship and arrival it makes things alot easier.

I wonder if the Lucy Smith, 62, shown directly below Mabel and Eileen on the passenger list for the Ascania in 1916 is related.  She is shown with an address in Hadley Wood Barnet and that is where George's birth was registered.

Free BMD has the birth registration of a George Morton Smith in Dec 1887 Barnet 3a 2_3  altough he gives a birth year of 1888 on his attestation papers.

Hi Karen,

This is fantastic - thank you very much for the info! I've found the original page that lists Mabel and Eileen, from the link you provided to Libraries and Archives Canada. It's always great to have an original document.

They must have left pretty much at the same time as George. From what I can gather, he boarded the RMS Olympic in November 1916, as part of the 180th Battalion of the CEF.

Debbie — Lucy Smith could well be a relative, which is intriguing. The location would certainly fit, as you point out. That his birth was registered in 1887 is something else to investigate! I wonder if my family still has his birth certificate.

George Morton Smith's parents were called George and Kate Smith. He was born on 19 January 1863 in Gloucestershire, and they had moved to Barnet by 1886. Though I haven't found out much about that generation yet. Maybe a new aunt has just turned up...

Thanks again for your help!
