Burwash - Webb - The Vicars
« on: Sunday 11 October 09 14:20 UTC (UK) »

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Webbs as Vicars in Burwash. I have details of John Webb's ordination from the Church of England Database and also have some info on his son John attending Balliol College in Oxford. However, there is no mention of them in the book I have on The Church of St Bartholomew in the list of vicars. They appear in the National Archives a number of times and seem to be an important part of Burwash but other than that I can find little about them.

In particular I would like to know where John the Elder born about 1640 came from.

Not sure if anyone can help, it might be possible that they appear in Coker-Egertons book on Burwash he does mention John Webb once in Sussex Folk and Sussex Ways.

Am I right in thinking that if you became a vicar you could be posted to any church and wouldn't necessarily have to come from that area?

Second, does anyone know what college at Cambridge you would study to be a minister/vicar in about 1640?

Have found a trail that might or might not be one worth following.

I don't think they had specific colleges at Oxford/Cambridge for Theology.   They went to whichever one accepted them.
Many vicars got local posts because their family held the living - ie could offer the post to someone they knew but that could easily mean a move to another part of the country if someone offered them a living there.  Nepotism of the first order.
Is it possible they just lived in Burwash rather than being the vicar?   Many did not actually have a parish.  "Preacher without cure of souls" or were teachers etc.

John the Elder was definitely a vicar of Burwash, both are mentioned quite a lot in the Archives with John the Junior being a clerk.
There is an entry in the Oxford Alumni
'John Webb, son of John of Burwash, Sussex, gent. (subs. "minister') Balliol College matric 22 May 1685 aged 17 his father vicar of Burwash 1662'
The Church of England Database also has dates for John Webb being vicar of Burwash.

So i started looking for one for John Webb the Elder and found one with the dates about right in Cambridge Alumni in Peterhouse College.

Lambeth Palace London has records of Anglican Clergymen.

Have you been to the local RO in this case Lewes and looked at the PR's for the period that Mr Webb was the Vicar - maybe they have other documents for St Barts for the same period.
