Why can't I find him???
« on: Sunday 11 October 09 14:44 UTC (UK) »

My gr-granda Alexander McGuigan was born in late 1870 early 1871. I know this as I have managed to get his death certificate. He died on 31/08/1908 at Aldershot Garrison aged 37. As his birth was well after civil registration began he should be somewhere. I have tried Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales without success. Oral history suggests that he may have come from County Antrim. He married my gr-granny on 17/11/1890 and they both lived at different numbers in Scotch St. Belfast at that time. I have been told that I cannot get his military record as this would have been destroyed after 20 years because he died in service. Anybody got any ideas please Huh??

What was father's name and occupation on marriage certificate? there are several possibilities in IGI (www.familysearch.org) but without at least father's name impossible to tell if any are correct person.
Since you are estimating his birthdate from date of death it might be that he was older or younger than you think.

Hi,
On one subscription site I have found the marriage which you mentioned on 17 Nov 1890. On another pay to view site I found a marriage for Alexander McGuigan in Co Antrim where the father was EDWARD, but I cannot find a birth where the father was Edward. Perhaps Aghadowey can help.

Regards

Thanks all for your replies. His father's name was Edward and he is shown as a labourer and alive in 1890.

Can't see any on IGI with Edward as father but you might want to search there just in case I missed something.
Remeber that having father's name and occupation on marriage certificate doesn't mean that the father was alive at the time of the marriage.

Thanks Aghadowey. The marriage extract does say that his father was a labourer [living] .

Most unusual to have father mentioned as living on marriage certificate and I am rather doubtful that living would have been on original record.

It also says that the wife's father was living. The extract was provided by Emerald Ancestors whom I have found to be pretty reliable.
