I have located my 18th-century roots in Pentrich, Derbyshire: only the usual problems there.
Then I came across a very interesting collateral line, mainly one Vincent Whysall.
According to http://www.familysearch.org, the only obvious birth is “About 1757 Of Wingfield, Pentrich, Derby”.
Again according to http://www.familysearch.org, on 12 April 1788 at South Wingfield, Derby, (a) Vincent Whysall marries Martha Fritchly. Obviously a local girl (as indicated by familysearch), with a surname taken from the next village, barely a couple of miles to the south-west of South Wingfield.
Then, according to the magnificent, marvellous http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/Crime.htm#Petty, he is before the beak: "1788.4 WHYSALL Vincent (South Wingfield, Sc[arsdale Hundred]) Farmer [Poaching: possession tools] fine: £5.00 (Revell [magistrate])"
Now, our Vinny is a naughty lad. A second offence has him at the Derby Assizes in 1791, where he is sentenced to transportation for seven years. Sure enough, he turns up as “Vincent Whyzall”, arriving at Botany Bay, the following year [see http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/page89.html]
I now lose sight of him, though there is a recorded death of a Vincent Whysall in the official UK records for the quarter ending June 1839. [Basford District; volume 15; page 302].
So, does anyone know of a record of returning transportees? Is there, by any chance, anyone able to put more flesh on said Vincent(s)?

OK, OK: this is my fourth attempt at composing a coherent reply. This is caused by [a] "TGIF" a.k.a. "POETS" [If you don't know, don't ask]; [b] a passing acquainance with Bushmills whiskey; and [c] a very pleasant dinner with my wife, involving a bottle of Australian wine.
To business:
Yep, I had noted Ellen Whysall, born 1842, registered in the Basford District, GRO 19.147 (and that's also on FreeBMD). I did not have the marriage: for which much thanks. "Great gallumphing genealogies, Batman, another line of enquiry!"
I did have Vincent from the 1881 Census (also on familysearch.org) at 10 Huntsmans Houses, Attercliffe-cum-Darnall. The household is Vincent, aged 41, his wife "Emma" [sic], aged 40, and their eight ... eight~!~ ... children. Vincent and his two elder sons, John, aged 19, and Vincent, aged 16, are all decribed as "coal-miners".
I guess that this is the Vincent getting married (on FreeBMD) in the second quarter of 1892, in Rotherham [GRO:9c.985]. The last of the Vincents is born in the third quarter of 1895, registered in Rotherham [GRO:9c.704].
However, and here is the problem, things get more difficult working backwards. I do not have a rock-solid confirmation of Vincent being born in 1840-41: most probably because I need to look outside of Derbyshire. I do have a Vincent's death in the second quarter of 1839 [GRO 15, 302]. I am trying to prove/ disprove this is my convict relative.
So, in short, well done, girl. Thanks for the input. Keep up the good work! And keep in touch.
And good-night from a chilly and breezy London, as we wait for a cold spell.
