« on: Sunday 11 October 09 19:32 UTC (UK) »

Hello

Wliiam Chidgey:

1871 Census 76 Meadow St, Bristol St Pauls

William Chidgey 84 b @1787 Minehead, Lodger widower, bedridden (his last record)

Can anyone tell us when he d and his age. He is variously b during his life as:

50 in 1841 (ie b @1791)
72 in 1861 (ie b @1789)
84 in 1871 (ie b @1787)

Would his death cert give date and place of birth? His wife Elizabeth d after 1861 but not sure when)

Regards

Would William have been known by any other name?  There is a Robert Chidgey died SepQ 1871, registered in Bristol, aged 79.

The only William I can find near the same age died 1875, aged 77, registered in Taunton.

The BMD index does not give age at death until the later 1860s, there are 5 Elizabeth Chidgey's who died in that decade, 2 of them were registered in Bristol.

Do you have any more info? Did they live in Bristol in 1861?

Hope this might be some help

Hello

William Chidgey m Elizabeth Hollister in 1822 at St Philip & St Jacob Church Bristol. They were recorded as below:

1841 Census 1 Wardrobe Place, Bedminster, Bristol St Pauls
1861 Census 51 Meadow St, Bristol St Pauls
1871 Census 76 Meadow St, Bristol St Pauls

He d after 1871, she after 1861. This is all the info I have. If he was bedridden in 1871, I would imagine he would have d in bed or certainly in Bristol. Elizabeth was b @1800

His son William Henry Chidgey Newick (he was illegitimate and was given both parents surnames) was a shopkeeper living in Bristol St Pauls in 1871 with his wife and 7 children

This may be a long shot, but the 1881 census shows a William CHEDZOY aged 96, born Minehead, in Bristol City Workhouse.

The BMD index shows a death of William CHEDZOY in SepQ 1882, aged 97.  District Barton R., Vol 6a, Page 49.  (Barton Regis seems to include the right area of Bristol for this to be a possibility)

Hi

Thanks again

I have found both records. What can I say. If this is our man then we have

William Chedzoy/Chidgey b 1785-1791 Minehead, m 1822 Bristol (aged 31-37) d possibly 1882 aged 97

His wife Elizabeth Hollister bap, I think, 5/8/1798 Keynsham, d between 1861 and 1871
(up to 14 years younger than William)

One son Henry b illegitimate 1824 bap 1837 Bristol

The problem with WC is that there is nothing consistent about him (except Bristol) and as such may elude us. Without a bap or dob and a d, we don't know whether the man in between is the same as at either end.

Unless I can find another person researching this family who can shed light, I think we will have to accept defeat for the time being. Perhaps there are others who are familiar with the names Chedzoy/Chidgey who can assist

Could you possibly give me the dofd of the various Elizabeth Hollisters who d in Bristol?

Deaths (+ births and marriages) are searchable for the dates you are looking at on Freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Searching under Gloucestershire there are some in the Bristol area.

Added - have you looked at the surname interests table to see if anyone else on RootsChat is researching the name?

Hello

Referring to your info:

"This may be a long shot, but the 1881 census shows a William CHEDZOY aged 96, born Minehead, in Bristol City Workhouse"

I have found a list of inmates of the Barton Regis Union Workhouse , Stapleton, Glos, recorded in the 1881 Census, but William Chedzoy is not one of them. Were there 2 workhouses, Bristol and Clifton (later renamed Barton Regis Union in 1877)? though both share the address Barton Regis, Stapleton

Hello

He's there - Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton, registration district Barton Regis
RG11/2508 folio 120 page 10

They're not all listed in alphabetical order on the census.

This link gives them in alphabetical order http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
Also gives the history of and location of workhouses.

Hello

The link you gave is where I originally found the list of workhouse addresses and from that list found the Clifton (Barton Regis from 1877) Workhouse. This was the only workhouse listed that was in Bristol.

W C is not in that list of 1048 inmates. I have copied the list and placed it in Excel

Can you tell me where on this site is a list that you say does include him. The only workhouse I can find him in is on a certain ancestry web site (that I cannot mention) and that only has surnames beginning with B and C. That Workhouse was called Bristol City Workhouse. I have also copied this part list onto Excel. The names on both are not duplicated

I have e-mailed Bristol Records Office to ask if there were 2 workhouses in Bristol at that time, Bristol City and Clifton, both using Stapleton and Barton Regis as addresses (apparently there were in 1867). Another Roots chatter also had a relation living at the Bristol City Workhouse, but is not found on the other

Perhaps you could send me the list which includes W C, by e-mail

Hello Iwona

Ancestry has the full listing of staff and inmates in the Bristol City Workhouse on the 1881 census, there are 49 pages, William is on page 10, the W's on page 48.

The link to the workhouse site, http://www.workhouses.org.uk/, has the full alphabetical list of inmates transcribed from the 1881 census - on the Home page put Bristol City in search, scroll down to 1881 census Inmates of Bristol Union Workhouse, scroll down to inmates and you'll find William Chedzoy  Smiley

It's well worth having a look at the Admissions and Guardians' Minutes books, provided they have survived.

Although very sad, I found a wealth of information on my great grandmother, in another county.  The books were in a fragile state and couldn't be copied.  This was a while ago, now some Record Offices will digitally photo records, or allow digital photography by personal visit.

Hello Keziah

Thanks for the help. Between the 2 Workhouses there were over 2300 residents, that's a lot of people in one town!

Would we have to visit Bristol Records Office to peruse the Admissions and Guardians Minutes books?

Unfortunately at the end of the day, I am not sure whether William Chedzoy is our man. Perhaps if the above books are available and accessible, we might find out more about him

Email the RO to find out what they hold.

The records I looked at were in another county, Hereford, and were at Hereford RO.  As I said earlier the books were very informative although sad, as they couldn't be copied I transcribed the information - next time will take digital camera!
