'Family Tree' Software?
« on: Sunday 11 October 09 20:57 UTC (UK) »

Anyone give me a few general words about these things, please? I've nothing specific in mind as I haven't a clue what's out there or what it's supposed to do.

Basically; I want to be able to strip my own tree ~ photo's, records, the lot ~off of Ancestry and it'd obviously be quicker and less drudge if I had a software that allowed this.

I rent a chunk of cyberspace and would be looking at hosting my stuff there.

See background Here for better understanding.

 Thanks.

You can obtain the data from your ancestry.com tree by asking them to send you a GEDCOM file.  That is the easy bit.

However you have mentioned photographs and records.  A gedcom file does not contain those nor does it preserve the links to the images.

When you get your gedcom file sent to you as an email attachment from ancestry, you will need to import it into some software.  Some software like PAF from familysearch is free and there are a few others that are free but you will nedd to pay for most software.  Most companies provide a free trial so you can assess which one suits you.  Some software lets you create webpages so you can upload those to your website.  Websites such as Tribal Pages only require you to upload a gedcom file and they will create a website for you.

You will need to relink your images to records when you decide on the software you want to use.

Cheers for that, Downside. Luckily, I keep every jpeg image of every Certificate and photo I upload. Have them all neatly stored away on a hard drive disc.

I'm sitting here with this banging in my head, ye know? Every hour that my site remains active, I'm being intellectually raped by this parasite. They're known to my family and I. We've all fended off their sly approaches and attempts to draw off information from us. Now Ancestry are just giving it to them anyway.

If I can clear my data, I'll just keep it Off lie and shall send new information to my family as I discover it.

I'm completely sickened and disgusted.

Hi Steve,

there a lot of recommendations on theTechnical Board for peoples favourite programs which you may well have seen.

Even if you just get  temporary free software it will allow you to get free of Ancestry quickly while you decide the best programme  Especially as all your jpegs are on hard disc.
Although I have all on C;drive I also have everything duplicated on an external Hard disc.

I agree totally with your sentiments regarding intellectual rape. Worse than being burgled (and I have been ,but that sort of abuse by a so-called fellow genealogist was worse)

Springbok!  Grin As ever, it's good to hear from ye.

I'm down loading my stuff onto a Gedcom, as I type. As your post alerted in the mail, I was squinting at a little thing I have here. I just worked out it's 126 MB of weird little 'HDD'. Considering the speed at which my GC's coming down? This'll hold the raw data in a tiny corner of itself  Smiley (Then, one of my Dogs will swallow this tiny little thing and .....  Roll Eyes)

I've been all over the place already. There's enough software out there to support a small shop! What I'd be looking for, in an ideal world, is something which replicates the format I've been using on Ancesspit. Then I could fluently pop all my scans back into place. Only, this time round, I'll keep it all here in my cottage and will Never show any sign of having been interested in the stuff I'm paying through the nose to view on their site.

Burgled? At least I have my own, physical problems for a burgler to overcome here. On my site? It's like those I trusted have just said, " It's ok. He's out. In ye come Wink Just help yeself. And Enjoy! "  Angry

No more enjoyment tomorrow. My site will be wiped!

Good lad!

I've allowed my searching enthusiasm to get out of hand(well my kids can sort it out can't they?)

A hundred (or is it a million?) downloads and 52 photo albums .Just hope I last out long enough to find my "missing" relatives before I meet their shades face to face!!

Happy to share with "blood relatives" but will haunt the rapists!!

Still love my familyhistorian progranne 3. 2.(plus Nicks Census programme)  but the new 4. goes beyond my capabilities (Gadget is more conversant with the upgrade)

Nice to contact again Steve

Ok. This time, as the alert arrived, I was sat here examining my data from my Gedcom!

I've just got Gen Viewer Lite. That's an Awfully bog standard freebie. But, it's allowing me to get a look and make sure of what I have here. Everything appears to be there, thus far. Even the URL's to my 'photo's'. Handy for reminding me to methodically comb through my folders and put them where ever else they next go.

Family Historian Programme? ..........  Huh  Shocked  Aaaaaaghhh!!! What's going on here?!  Sorry, Springers; I appear to have started writing this response an hour or two ago. Then my sister appeared and .....  Embarrassed

Anyway, Sis sent me new family photo's. They're on this PC and staying there.

My main thrust, right now, is finding that SW which will most closely replicate the format I'm used to on Ancesspit. Eg. I like to show 'Family History'. As in; Where they lived / when. What they were doing at the time. Where I gleaned this information. So forth.

Only, this time round, I think I'd sooner it stayed with me. HDD, CD, what ever. Of course, a way of sending out up dates to PC illiterate family would be good too. I'm no 'Programmer' myself, of course. But, I don't want everybody having to buy, or even DL ~ if avoidable ~ something else to share my stuff through.

Anyway, maybe someone wil have made sense of and responded to this, by the time I have time to make sense of that, next time?  Undecided

 I'll get there.
