looking for any information on Charles George & Susanna/Sussanah SPEED (nee Wells)

married in Bombay, India 1861
4 children born in India, the last in 1866
next child Louisa Edith born in Adelaide SA in 1869 followed by 4 more all born in Adelaide (? SA at least)

Sussanah died in 1899 at "Gilbert St, Grey Ward" (from death certificate) There seem to be several different spellings of her name!

Hi Dee - sorry not to be specific, I'm floundering a bit here

If the birth information is available that would be wonderful!
Louisa Edith b.1869
Frank Charles or Charlie b.1871
Susannah Charlotte b. 1873 & d 1876
Martha Charlotte b. 1877
Victor Charles Joker b. 1882 (maybe susannah thought she was finished giving birth by that last one!)

Also wondering when Charles, Susannah & the older children arrived here from India as I've come to a dead end from here

Louisa Edith born 18th Feb 1869 at Norwood
Ref = Ade 55/365

Frank Charlie born 4th January 1871 at Norwood
Ref = Ade 90/365

Susannah Charlotte born 20th Feb 1873 at Norwood
Ref = Ade 119/363

Martha Charlotte born 29th January 1877 at Norwood
Ref = Ade 177/379

Victor Charles Joker born 7th Nov 1882 at Yatala
Ref =  PtA 292/368

Here are some deaths of some of those children.....

Louisa Edith SPEED aged 9 months and two weeks died on 30th November 1869.
Her family was living in Norwood at the time, and she died there. 
Her father Charles was listed as her relative.
Ref =  Ade 29/230

Martha Charlotte SPEED aged 19 died on 31st August 1896 at Adelaide. She was a resident of Adelaide at the time.
Relative listed was her father, Charles George SPEED.
Ref = Ade 237/318

SPEED Susannah C aged 4 years died on 28th December 1876 at Norwood.
Her family was residing at Norwood at the time.
Relative listed was her father George Charles SPEED.
Ref =  Ade S 78/124

Do you have the deaths of the parents?

These burials were at West Terrace Cemetery

SPEED Louisa Edith 2 Dec 1868 aged 9 months of Norwood
SPEED Susannah 29 Dec 1876 aged 4 years of Norwood
SPEED Martha Charlotte 2 Sep 1896 aged 19 of Gilbert Street

and Mum

SPEED Susannah 9 Oct 1899 aged 52 of Gilbert Street (agrees with your death cert)

From the BISA

SPEED Charles George born in Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland. He died 1900 Adelaide SA. He arrived 1868. occupation - Secretary. residence - Adelaide
married in Calcutta, India to unknown born India children Frank, Charles, Walter Chas 1868

Marriages for a couple of the sons.....


The son Frank Charley SPEED married aged 21 on 20th July 1892 to Maggie Simpson COTTON also aged 21. Both single. Married at the residence of Rev E G Day in  Adelaide.
Fathers  = Charles G SPEED & George H COTTON
Ref = Ade 172/240

Walter Charles SPEED aged 25 married on 1st September 1888 to Mary Jane GLUYAS aged 17. Both given as single. Married at the residence of W Gluyas in  Port Augusta.
Fathers = Chas George SPEED & William GLUYAS
Ref = Fro 156/677

I can't thank you both enough!

I have just today found Victor Charles Joker's war service records form WW1 - he made it back to Australia; listed his next of kin as his wife with a WA address & his will was with Frank Charlie also a WA address although I know for a fact that FC was in SA in the early 1900s (ran a pub in Norwood). Looks like I head into WA for more info though . . .

Kris - that is the first information we've had on Charles George Speed & will help enormously I'm sure

Frank Charlie Speed & Maggie Simpson Cotton are my g-grandparents. Their  daughter, Lilian May Speed, is my grandmother although I don't have any siblings for her. Isn't it a shame we don't find this interest earlier when people are alive & might be able to give us information?

absolutely new info on Walter Charles though - the tree grows & grows!

Charles George SPEED is listed as secretary to "The Adelaide Club" (North Terrace opposite Government House)
