Hi All, I am trying to find information regarding borough relief. I was told that it was something set up by the wife of the Mayor of Thames to help people in need. I have contacted the Thames Council but received no reply.
I am hoping that there are records like the ones at the Auckland Archives for Auckland relief requests.
Thank you Belinda

Yes the ladies of the time spent alot of time on philanthropic interests. Dec 1869 the HAURAKI LADIES BENEVOLENT SOCIETY was founded, Mrs ELiza Mackay (wife of resident commissioner) was first president.
Male run organisations were also in existence.
There was the Thames Orphanage as well.
1885 the THAMES AND COROMANDEL DISTRICT CHARITABLE AID BOARD was set up to deal with relief need.
You see reports in early newspapers of the approval of monies to certain peopla and what societies were doing. (Thames Advertiser)
Papers past has reports on the society eg. one is http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=DSC18711124.2.23&srpos=1&e=-------10--1----2%22hauraki+ladies+benevolent%22-all
Are you after info on specific people or more on the organisations themselves.
Rosemary Killip's book: TO FIND A FORTUNE, 1995 describes the work of women on the goldfield, but there are also many other.
Bye Althea

My gosh Althea you are so much help!!!
According to hospital records, my George Green was receiving Borough Relief in 1884. I'm hoping there are records that state how many children he was receiving help for.
Thank you again! Belinda

Oh wow that would be great! His name was George GREEN born c1815. He died in 1893 in Auckland and on his death certificate it stated that he had 8 children: Male born c1963 Female born c1864 Female born 1868 Female born 1871 Female born 1873 (Could be Elizabeth or Ellen) Male born 1876 (Could be George) Male born 1878 (Could be Thomas) Male born 1882
The wife's name should have been Ellen but with George it's hard to say
I'm hoping to search through the Anglican baptism records for Thames as the above children's births weren't registered but a couple were baptised.
Thank you so much for all your help.
Belinda

He died in Auckland. It states his place of burial but when I called them I was told there is no record of him.
His wife Ellen re-married the same year he died.
He doesn't appear in any electoral rolls at all which is a bit strange. His name appears in the Auckland Archives reccords of the City of Glasgow Mines.
There is a record of an Elizabeth GREEN on the NZSG version 5 cd. She is living with a John Murray while attending school. I searched electoral rolls and found a John Murray who was a teacher in Thames.
Thank you again Belinda

Hi there, David GREEN is actually Thomas GREEN. On his Industrial School record he is recorded as David Thomas GREEN. Then when he was placed in the Auckland Lunatic Asylum his name was Thomas GREEN with ISHERWOOD in brackets next to it.
I forgot to mention that George changed his last name to ISHERWOOD c1888.
I know it's very confusing!!

Auckland archives do have some later records, but haven't found any for the years you want (as yet) What month was he in hospital, and I'll just have a look in the papers before the date to see if they have any charitable reports..they usually do Bye Althea

Nothing to report, had a look at the papers for these months but couldn't sadly see any reports from the different aid organisations. No one in town seems to have any of the old records either
