Richard PITCHFORD - Wales to Australia Feb. 1864
« on: Monday 12 October 09 08:35 UTC (UK) »

This also is an off-shoot of topic "Catherine Wilkinson/N. Jacobs etc." in which quite some info. was passed regarding Richard (Francis Richard) Pitchford and his marriage to Margaret Wilkinson in December 1864.
I have received copy of original certificate - they were married at "Mrs. Fadges' Residence, Kapunda", on 3rd December, 1864, and 2 witnesses at wedding were: William Fadge, Miner and Mary Fadge. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Morgan Williams, Congregational Minister.
I have a strong feeling that they may have known each other before setting off for Australia - and I have wondered why they didn't marry before sailing. You have given me the ship as "Utopia" -  on which Margaret sailed, arr. Pt. Adelaide 8 Feb. 1864 - do you have a ship for Richard?
I checked up again on 1851 Census - Francis Richard and brother Francis (Frank) were living with parents in Newcastle, Shropshire, which is not far north of Clun.
Also in 1871 Census: parents of Francis Richard, Frank, etc., (Francis &  wife Elizabeth (Hill)) and their dau. Margaret are living in Trevethin village, Abersychan - which is where Margaret Wilkinson lived with her family.   Possibly the families knew each other.   Is there any way of finding out if there was any further connection?

Hi Ruth,

We did give you Richard's immigration on the other thread - It was Richard who sailed on the Utopia - not Margaret.  Undecided

The original thread.

I have been to the library today. I did tell you I would check the passenger lists when next at the library. I had not been to Adelaide since I made the offer. I do not live in the city, but do come down every few weeks.

Margaret's husband is Francis Richard, yet his brother was Francis as was his father - most confusing

1876 SA Almanac and Directory

PITCHFORD Francis, blacksmith, Forreston
PITCHFORD R., wheelwright, Jamestown

1881 SA Almanac and Directory

Pitchford & Mutton, blacksmiths, Yongala

PITCHFORD Richard arrived 8 Feb 1864 aboard the UTOPIA as an assisted immigrant. He was single, aged 23, a carpenter. He was selected from Monmouth. agent Scott and Sons. Pd £4. His conduct aboard the ship was good.

PITCHFORD
Francis arrived 24 Sep 1865 aboard the ELECTRIC as an assisted immigrant. He was married, aged 22, a blacksmith. He was selected from Monmouth - agent Scott and Sons, Pd £1. He was travelling with his wife Elizabeth aged 22 and his son William aged 2

I think it is interesting that Francis, Richard and their family do not seem to be in the 1861 census like Margaret and her family. All seem to be missing - 1871 Richards family are now living in Trevethin where Margaret is from. I wonder where all these people were in 1861. All together somewhere? 1851 Margarets father is a coal miner - missing in 1861 and then he is back and has a hotel.

I'm not sure if you have this already:

Looks as though there was some connection with the Pitchford family and Trevethin

I would suggest that this chap may well be the brother of Francis and Richard.
In the 1861 Wales census there is
John PITCHFORD, 24, b Herefordshire (no town given), blacksmith
Sarah A PITCHFORD, 24, b Henbury, Glos, wife
Francis T PITCHFORD, 1, b Trevethin, Abersychan, Monmouthshire, Wales
This couple's marriage (maiden name Sarah Anne Phillips), reg Pontypool June qr 1859

Francis PITCHFORD m Elizabeth REES, June quarter 1861 registered Abergavenny district. This district does not include Trevethin but is later to become Pontypool district. Trevethin and Pontypool are only a mile or so apart.   Their son William's birth was registered Pontypool Dec qr 1862.

Hope this is of some use.
