I have been looking to trace the parents of my ancestor William Holt b.1798 who died on 3rd Apr 1838 in Newton Heath Manchester (I have a copy of his death certificate).
William was married on the 1 Jan 1824 to Mary Ann Ramsbottom b.25 Sept 1799 in Bury Lancashire at Manchester collegiate church. Given the date, the record is in the standard pro-forma ledger used, which only gives names of parties; condition (Bachelor, Spinster, Widow etc.); of which parish - no ages; no fathers; and from what I have read very occasionally an occupation. People from a wide area went to Manchester to get a license, and quite frequently stay there to get married.
I hate the fact the tree is at a standstill. The Holt family and living relatives ‘the Ramsbottoms’ can be found on the 1841 census, 3 years after Mary Ann’s husband William died. William Holt died 30th March 1838 in Ancoats and I have no trace of his parents.
On the 1851 Census Mary Ann is living at Droylsden Highway, Manchester, Newton (unfortunately Mary Ann is a widow) with her children and mother.
HOLT, Mary Ann F 35 1806 - Berry HOLT, Ellen F 15 1826 HOLT, Martha F 14 1827 HOLT, John M 11 1830 HOLT, George M 8 1833 HOLT, Ann F 4 1837 RAMSBOTTOM, Ann F 65 1776 RAMSBOTTOM, John M 15 1826
The best fit that I have for Mary Ann Ramsbottom is a baptism on 20 March 1803 to a John, with the most likely parents being John Ramsbottom & Ann Hill who were married at St Mary bury 10 Sep 1799. The main church in the Bury area was St Mary (bapts & marrs on IGI), with chapels of ease at Edenfield and Holcombe.
Can someone please take a look at the Newton Heath parish records, as apart from the microfilms in Manchester library, the Lancashire Parish Register Society published the Newton Heath registers in book form, so the books are in quite a few Lancashire libraries. Can anyone help me find Williams father, as hopefully he would also be a blacksmith as it was common to follow in ones fathers footsteps.
The Newton Heath registers do have some burials, so William Holt's death in 1838 might be in there - and I need that confirmed. I can see a John 'Ramsbotham' baptism on IGI at Newton Heath; 15 Aug 1802, mother Anne Ramsbotham. So if anyone can look those two up it would really be appreciated. Any info would really be appreciated.
