Digging up the dead and annoying the living...
|
Hi there,
I wonder if any kind person would have access to the marriage registers of Stonham Aspal for 1917.
I realise that this is relatively recent, but I am only after one small piece of information; the age of the groom, to confirm if it was his widow that was killed as a civilian in the Second World War.
The details are as follows;
Alfred RATTLE & Alice Jane LAST, married in the third quarter of 1917.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
John

I believe that the SRO only sells copies of its holdings on microfiche up until 1900, though it may be possible to view the original film in person. This rather limits your request to those who are actually visiting the SRO though.

As you probably know, CWGC describes Alice Jane Rattle (58 in 1942) as:
Daughter of William and Harriet Elizabeth Last, of Stonham Aspall, Suffolk; widow of Alfred Rattle, of Cheveley, Suffolk.
There's only one Rattle/mmn Last birth (Sep qtr 1918 Newmarket).
This looks likely to be Alfred's death:
Alfred RATTLE aged 58, Sep qtr 1921 Newmarket 3b 491.
Even if you do get access to the marriage register, Alfred's age may be no more specific than "full age".

Hi Anna,
Many thanks for that, yes this is the Alice who was killed when bombs were dropped on the Cambridge Union; you may have seen my posts in the Cambridge forum.
You are probably dead right about the 'full age' as well, as I suspect that he was twenty years older; so I am not holding my breath at the moment!
Kind regards - John

Well, for what it's worth there was only one Alfred RATTLE in Newmarket registration district (indeed it seems he was actually in Cheveley, though I'm only going off the free index) in the 1911 census - aged 47 with a wife, Elizabeth, of the same age and their children.
Likely death for Elizabeth RATTLE, aged 53, Sep qtr 1916 Newmarket.
So the circumstantial evidence, at least, points to his being a very good candidate for Alice's husband in 1917.
