Marriage Registers - Biggleswade - OSBORN
« on: Monday 12 October 09 20:28 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out more about my great great great grandfather James OSBORN and his wife Mary.

According to the 1851 Census he was born at Lee Common near Chesham in 1781.

He may have married his wife Mary (b. 1771) in Biggleswade, her birthplace, sometime before 1816.

He was an ostler and his son William become one too, so James' father may well have been one as well.  That's as much information as I have.

Any help to confirm James OSBORN's details and the maiden name and details of his wife Mary would be most welcome.

Thanks
Christopher

The 1851 census show James and Mary with their married daughter Sarah.  Sarah is aged 39, and born in Chesham, Bucks - so birth year c1811

The IGI shows two children of James and Mary Osborn baptised at Chesham: Martha in 1806, and Elizabeth in 1809.

So the marriage of James Osborn and Mary Peet at Chesham in 1803 - again on the IGI looks quite likely?

There's no Mary Peet baptised in Biggleswade, so it would be worthwhile checking the microfilm of Chesham parish register at your nearest LDS Family History Centre to see if Mary was described as widow - if her age in 1851 was correct she would have been 32 on marriage, so may well have been a widow.

In the period up to 1812 the last Peet baptism or marriage in Biggleswade was in 1719, although there were two burials: Ann Peat on 25 May 1788 (no other detail) and John Peat son of John "County of Durham" on 2 Aug 1795.

Thanks Galium and bedfordshire boy

I'll chase up both lines of enquiry when I next get to the LDS FHC and follow up this posting.

All the best
