I have been unable to find the death of Robert GARDNER who supposedly died aboard the ship "Christina" He was travelling with his wife Mary Forbes. Family stories say they both worked for the Duke and Dutchess of Argyle in Scotland. Can anyone help please? Annette

The following marriage is shown between a Robert Gardiner and a Mary Robina Forbes on the Scotland's People site:
1880, Leith North, Midlothian
If this is of interest, it can be viewed on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's pay to view but very reasonable

Mary was easier to search for. There were two. Neither were yours.

Hi Gadget - thanks for your help! Robert and Mary's daughter Janet Struth was born 24th May 1888 in Scotland so his death would either have to be in the year she was born, or afterwards so we just have 1881 as a starting date. I was very remiss in not saying the family were travelling to Australia - please forgive me! Thanks for the marriage - I will get some credits so I can have a look. I'm sure it must be them. Mary ended up with one heck of a name after she remarried - Mary Robina Forbes Gardner Peterson. What a mouthfull. I hope this new info on where the family were moving to, and the date, will help. Thankyou again, Annette.

Hi Annette
I've checked the outward going passengers lists (from 1890) and can't find them so they might well have travelled before 1890
I'll check OS deaths from 1888 to say 1900
Daughter Janet's birth cert will also be on Scotland's People.

Hello again Gadget, I'm trying to work out dates here, and think the family may have travelled abt 1885. I've just found some info for Mary Forbes on Family Search with her family possibly going back a couple of generations, but nothing for Robert Gardner. Once again many thanks for helping with this, and I'm sorry the details are so slow in coming. I'm working from some family papers and the family is very muddled! Annette.

Oh fantastic! Thats got to be them. The family story was that they worked for the Duke and Dutchess of Argyle which would fit in with Robert being a gamekeeper. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Can't find his death but I've found a birth/baptism:
Kilmaronock - 30 Oct 1843 - Robert s/o James Gardner and Christina Grahame
(Think he was being a bit economical with the truth as to age!)

Think you are right Gadget. Even at 43 he was 10 years older than Mary
