Need help marriage cert - *completed with thanks*
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 05:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi There,

I am wondering if some one can read the correct date on this part of the marriage certificate of William George THOMPSON and Sarah WAITE.

This marriage Certificate was with their divorce file I received in the post today. On the divorce it say 8 January 1900 for the marriage date

I have check on-line adn have checked the marriage NZSG cd as well with no luck.

I think it reads August 8 1900

William signed with his mark

The marriage was witnessed by William sister and Sarah's brother

Regards
Newbe

Hi Newbe

I would say January, I've seen Jany used as an abbreviation before

I would have to agree with Andy, I have seen this when I have been transcribing.

Thanks Andy,

I wonder if I shoud take it into the Christchurch Internal Affairs office (BDM) and see if they can find it on their database

Anyone with ideas on this action would be great

They were my great grand uncle and aunt

Quite a few years ago I checked the BDM fiche for this marriage and could not find it either.

Getting this divorce file was the only way to get the marriage certificate to see when they married

I am so glad I got it now Cheesy

Hi newbe,

I don't think it reads 'August'. I agree with 'Jany' which I've seen several times as a contraction for January.

Interestingly, I can't find a record of the marriage on http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/search/

Thanks Riley,

I was thinking of a ITM lookup but am not sure if there will be one.

The Marriage took place in the District of Mangonui just out of Kaitaia

So the date will be 8 January 1900 by the look of it

Hi newbe,

Is the ITM just to confirm the date?

I'm not sure it will tell you anything you don't already know but I'll look for it if you wish.

Hi Newbe

*   What does the heading on the top of the marriage certificate say ?

"Marriages in the District of ________ for the quarter ending ________ "

*   Which Quarter ??

*   And has the Registrar added the date, underneath his signature ?

[I'd be "plumping for" the date which is given in the divorce papers.    A solicitor preparing documentation, would have noted this from the copy of the marriage certificate and if there'd been any doubt as to the actual date, would have sought clarification from his/her, client.     Cheesy ]

Hi Lu,

What I have is a copy of the Marriage certificate. There is no quarter on it.

The divorce papers say 8 January 1900 but as you can in the part image I posted it is hard to read the month on it.

In the left hand corner it has "A" Thompson v Thompson 18/3/1927

It has the names of the children in the divorce papers with their dates of birth so that is a big help as well

Heading says: Marriages in The District of Mangonui

No date under the registrar's signature at all

The marriage certificate is on A3 paper. It looks like it is quite old and has been folded in hald and half again

Hi Newbe

Mmm ...have just fished out a marriage cert. I have for 1901 ... and yes, it seems that in that era, for Marriages the Registrar just signed his name on a "dotted line" without adding a date.  (There is no separate box, like on later certificates, which carries the Registrar's details).
Also that top line on cert. "Marrriages in the District of ______ "
doesn't state "in the quarter ending __________ 1901".

[Funny that  ... have just checked an 1898 death cert.  .... and it has "quarter ending"  plus the Registrar's signature and the date in a separate box.   Well  ... I've learned something new today.   Cheesy ]

Anyway  ... getting back to the point ... the consensus here seems to be, that "January" is correct.   Wink

AND you have the, added benefit that,  "8 January 1900" is specified in the divorce  papers.    [If that (date) was in any way incorrect,  I'm sure it wouldn't have escaped the attention of the solicitors representing either party  ... nor that of the officiating "Beak" (Judge). ? Cheesy]

I am still thinking of taking it into the Office here in Christchurch and seeing if the can find it on their data base.

As I have said before it is not on-line, NZSG marriage cd or fiche

I would just like to know what it was registered under
