I am still thinking of taking it into the Office here in Christchurch and seeing if the can find it on their data base.

I would just like to know what it was registered under

I have been in today to Birth, Death and Marriage office of Internal Affairs and they are not able to find the marriage either so now I am being asked to write a letter outlining all the things I have done to find this marriage.

I then have to take the letter and marriage certificate in with me and speak to the same person I did today. They will take a photocopy of it and then send it to Wellington on my behalf

Hi newbe,

The thlot pickens, I couldn't find hide nor hair of the ITM either! I checked Auckland, Mangonui, Kaitaia, Thames, and Drury.

So how do you come to have a NZ marriage certificate associated with divorce papers and the NZ Registrar General has no record of the marriage taking place?

It might help if you could post an image of the complete certificate for us.

Hi Newbe,

I too am interested .... afterall I have NZ forebears on both my lines...  and I have one couple (John and Mary Smith) whose marriage has not been found as recorded in NZ despite much searching, here at RChat, on other sites, and for decades before the internet...  I have the apparent details for the marriage, 1881, in Wellington NZ, on various NSW records, including birth certificates for their many children (including several who did not survive infancy including one who lived just 15 hours) and on various family records too...

However, neither I nor my cousins despite protracted efforts .... well none of us have ever found the elusive marriage in any of the NZ BDM records..(either before or after it went online)  .... John and Mary SMITH....  her mum was DYKINS ... and Newbe,  Wink yep we have discussed that surname together....

I am hoping  the response you get back from Wellington may be of help to me in my search for John and Mary Smith ..... (fingers crossed over here in NSW)...

Cheers,   Wink

It is against copyright for me to post the whole certificate and I would be in trouble if I did.

If any one wants to see it can they contact me via the PM system

Or would it be easier for to write out whast it says

Newbe

PS: the office in Christchurch has taken a copy and attached it to a letter I wrote and has sent it to Wellington on my behalf

Hi newbe,

No worries at all. The possibility exists that they did complete an ITM somewhere other than in the far north (but why?) but without knowing their movements it isn't worth working through the ITM register. Were one or both of them known to be travelling prior to their marriage?

Regards, riley

p.s. Please let us know the outcome of your discussions with Dept of Internal Affairs.

Hi Newbe and Riley   Smiley

Just a (probably, daft) thought.    Huh

This marriage took place early in the new year of 1900.

I wonder therefore, was the ITM applied for in the preceding year.   Huh

An ITM notice (on payment of a fee) was valid for three months.    So it may have been applied for in, say, November 1899 ?

[Might explain the registrar (or minister) not entering the details of the eventual marriage, alongside details of the ITM notice, if this notice was "amongst the 1899 entries". ]  ?

Maybe the omission of the marriage from the official records, is simply just a case "sloppy book-keeping" (on the part of the Registrar) ?

Whatever  though ... it sure is an intriguing matter.   Cheesy
[Yep ... will be really interested to learn of DIA's response.]

Hi Newbe

Looks like the marriage was conducted by the (local) "Registrar" (rather than a minister).

[And back in earlier post ....  certificate image says marriage was in the "Office of the Registrar". ]

Signature looks like the surname is Clemett, first initial A.

Thanks Lu, for the lateral thinking!

I was only looking a week prior to the marriage date. I'll go back and have another look in the December quarter of 1899 (hopefully Friday).

If DIA staff are anything like I am with documents they will be very pleased to have a new record added to their collection.

Just adding the ITM would have been written by Sarah WAITE as William George THOMPSON could not read or write. This is noted in the divorce file
