Advice on finding Sarah Willet
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 09:31 UTC (UK) »

Hello!

Sarah Willet is named as the mother on my grandmothers birth certificate (1917). She didn't raise my grandmother. I have found a Sarah Willet in the census records (I could only find 1!). Is there any way I can find out if they are the same person? They were both housekeepers. I have Sarah Willets( the birth certificate one!) address at the time of the birth. Not sure how to go about this, or even if it's possible!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

hi missbee.
are the addresses on the birth cert and the census the same? is sarah living with her parents in the census?
if she is,you should know her fathers name, then you could try and find a death cert for sarah which will list her parents names, and if the fathers name and occupation on the death cert match the fathers name and occupation on the sensus, chances are its the same sarah.

Thanks Doch,
The Sarah in the 1901 census is living with her uncle and cousin at a different address to Sarah on the birth certificate in 1917. Most of the census Sarah's family live in Dalmellington. Maybe when there is access to the 1911 census it will help. It seems likely that the 2 Sarahs are the same person as I have been unable to find another one in existence in the census records, or births, deaths and marriages. Even with a different spelling. I just don't want to assume!

Hi and Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

The one b. 1900, Cambusnethan and on the 1901 census in Wishaw  aged 6 months died in 1902. This was the only registration with that name b. 1880-1903 showing on the Scottish registrations.  The Dalmellington one is the only one that would seem to fit but she would have been 39-40 when your grandmother was born.

Have you checked for any other possibles born Eng/Wales/Ireland  Undecided

The Dalmellington Sarah would have been the same age as my Great grandad(if that's who he is!) at the time. He was already married. My grandma was illegitimate and her name is the female version of his name with his surname as her middle name. Doesn't prove anything! But just trying to think of the circumstances that would result in my Great Grandad raising an illegitimate child and her mother vanishing. As far as I can tell, him and his wife had been married for 17 years with no children.(she died the year after my grandma was born and had 2 wives after).
I will check for Sarah Willets born elsewhere but I think I will still have the same problem linking them to my Sarah Willet.
Thanks for your help!
