Link to Kyffin Famiy Eglwysbach
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 11:13 UTC (UK) »

My great grandmother, Mary Jones b1850 was buried in 1902, together with her father Evan Kyffin Jones (b1819 d1881) and mother Catherine (b1822 d1862.) Their grave is right next to the two large railed family graves of Hugh Kyffin, which are located immediately opposite the main entrance door of Eglwysbach Church. I believe that their being next to each other was significant/deliberate, as they were in some way related and this is what I am trying to establish - how were they related? Is it through Evan or Catherine? Did Evan take on the name of Kyffin when he married Catherine? What was Catherine's maiden name? Were Hugh and Frances Kyffin Evans's parents? So many questions and possibilities!

My father did some research in the 1960s but the written information was lost.  However, I remember him saying that we are linked, far back, to the Kyffin family, through Thomas Kyffin (father William Kyffin of Maenan).  Thomas was the natural son of Mary Davies, who died in 1655.

Evan and Catherine farmed Llan Farm in Eglwysbach, which I believe is still there in part but the land is now built on. They had seven children, the second being Mary, my grandmother who married John Jones B1845 d1914 and farmed at Pendyffryn Farm in Dwygyfylchi. They had three children, John Evan, Mary Jane and Catherine Ann, my grandmother.

My father also mentioned a cousin called Dorothy, who in the 60s worked in a residential home next to the Groes Inn.  I realise that it is all a bit sketchy but hope that somebody will be able to find the missing link!!

Hi Eli G

Can't help with your Kyffin mysteries but Northwales BMD has this 1846 marriage:

Llanbedr y Cennin, St Peter
Evan JONES and Catherine EVANS
registers at Conwy County Borough (Llandudno) ref C12/1/14
the GRO reference is Festiniog June Q vol 27 page 279

The 1851 census lists Catherine`s birthplace as Caerhun.

Many thaks for this, at least with the surname, I can look further.  Clearly she wasn't  Kyffin before she married so presumably the link must be on Evans's side. Thanks again.

Hello Eli G,

Some of the Parish Registers of Caerhun can be seen on Freereg.

http://www.freereg.org.uk

There are 2 baptisms for Catherine EVANS there in the 1820s.

02/03/1823 Catherine EVANS daughter of Rowland and Dorothy EVANS.

22/03/1829. born 21/02/1829. Catherine EVANS daughter of Timothy and Anne EVANS. Mother's maiden name was PUGH. This at Tal y Bont (Cm) church.

Rowland and Dorothy EVANS also baptised:

Evan EVANS at Caerhun on 11/03/1821.
William EVANS on 22/08/1819.

In my family tree when a daughter married a man with a common name like Jones or Roberts, the mother's maiden surname was often given as a middle name to the sons from the marriage in order to carry forward her family name.  You may find that Evan Jones mother was a Kyffin. Wink

Given Catherine's stated  age of 30 in 1851 and assuming the Llanbedr marriage is the correct one, there is a possibility that she was a widow, as 25 was relatively late for a first marriage.   Obtaining the marriage certificate would help you by identifying Evan's father as well as ensuring you are tracing the correct Catherine......

I think this is the way forward as I will be able to get Evan's mother's (maiden) name from the marriage certificate. Thanks for looking.

Unfortunately marriage certificates in England & Wales only provide the father's name and occupation Sad  Many pre1837 parish registers do not provide the mother's maiden name either Sad Sad

Hi Eli G

You would order a marriage certificate in exactly the same way as a death certificate.  Either from the registrar of the district where the marriage took place or from the GRO using their online ordering system.  In either case you will need the reference numbers which were posted earlier in the thread in reply #1.

I have ordered three marriage certs. for Evan and Catherine Jones from the GRO and each time they have not issued one, as the bride's name in the reference given was not Catherine. I think the best way forward is to therefore order them from the Registrar of the district as suggested.  How do I go about finding the contact details of the registrar - would it be through Conwy County Council?

This is a very useful list; I think you will find what you need under Conwy.
