HI Iam trying to find the birth and parents of henry tomkins died 4th feb 1894  aged 54 in bairnsdale victoria he married mary elizabeth ann haywood in 1866 in otago new zealand he was born apparently 30th april 1840 don,t know where ,he named his 1st son william george henry /tomkins/ 2nd son edward arthur /tomkins/ henry  worked on ships between tasmania and australia and new zealand any clues ? cheers colin

Can't find a birth for Henry in Victoria or NSW.
Children of Henry { listed as Edward Henry on 3 entries} TOMKINS and Mary HAYWARD{ listed as HAYWOOD on 1}
1. William George Henry b 1869 Lucknow
2.Edward Arthur b 1872 Bair
3. Henry Ernest b 1874 Lucknow
4. Criscilla Eleanor b 1876 Bair
5. Amelia Rose b 1879 Lucknow
6. Albert Nood b 1881 Bair
7. Violet Arabella b 1883 Bair
8. Walter Eric b 1885 Bair
9. Maud Esther Annie b 1887 Bair

Henry TOMKINS d 1894 Bdale -parents unknown.

Maybe someone else knows where to go for crew records ??

thanks alison I have the discs for victoria and because his parents are unknown i hit the brick wall ,but thanks for trying .it is pre australia i,m trying for, have checked english census but found heaps of henrys but no links cheers colin

Hi Colin,
Have you looked at Victorian Public records office for the families entry into Australia { If Vic was where they came to} there are lots of Tomkins listed, but it might be a bit " needle in a haystack". They may be able to give you some leads on shipping crews between Australia and New Zealand. Any thing is worth a try.

Victorian certificates hold a good deal of information.

One of the birth certificates of his children Should say where and when Henry was born.

This is  the information that is detailed on a Victorian Birth Certificate.   

Date and place of birth;
name of child and whether present or not;
name of parents (including mother's maiden name);
occupation of parents;
ages and birthplace of parents;
date and place of marriage of parents;
previous children of their marriage noting living or deceased;
signature, description and address of the person who gave the information;
names of witnesses;
date and place of registation.

Do you have  the marriage certificate from New Zealand?

I've been attempting to help Colin with this on the NZ board.

Alas, these early NZ marriage records contain little helpful information.  i.e.  NOT recorded :  names of parents of bride & groom / birthplace of parties /  ... ages only shown if under 21 years of age.   (Have advised Colin of this, in one of his other threads).   Wink

a bit more information from  the birth which is all good  I noted  that  his name is Edward Henry Tomkins.

Yes  ... it is a dratted nuisance, lack of info on early NZ records.   (Just didn't want Colin to waste precious $$$ on something that was unlikely to help.   Cheesy)

"Edward Henry"   huh Huh     But seemingly known as "Henry" according to his signature on the cert. (and he's "Henry" on the NZ marriage index too).

Wish we could find this dude on a UK census return.   Sad
