St Bees police
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 13:49 UTC (UK) »

Hello all (or should I say "evening all"). I am trying to gather some information concerning William Douglas b.1822 in Newcastle.   In 1861 William ,aged 39, is recorded as being "Inspector of detectives" and resident at 5, Constabulary House, St Bees.   He was  married to a  Elizabeth Taylor.  In 1851, William was living at Croft Court,  St Andrews,  Newcastle . In 1871 the family where at 21,New Street,  Harrington.   He died in 1875 in Whitehaven. I would be most interested to hear if there is anything logged of Williams life in the police  in the mid 19th century in St Bees.  Williams sister ,  Ellenor Smith , nee Douglas, was my ggrandmother.

Closer inspection of the 1861 census shows that, although technically in the ancient parish of St Bees, his place of residence was actually in Whitehaven .... Scotch Street/Duke Street.

The Police HQ was actually the building that is now Whitehaven Records Office http://tinyurl.com/yz7w99s

Thankyou Geoff E .      Yes, I see there were 4 officers of the law resident in 1861.  Did St Bees parish cover Whitehaven as well in those days with respect to the census procedures?     Best wishes.    picamarra.

I think it's more a case that St Bees covered Whitehaven only in censuses.

There was also Preston Quarter which includes much of what is now Whitehaven.

Cheers Geoff-E .    Do you know my cousin, Geoff Steele ,who used to run the Queens in St Bees?  His father, my uncle Henry, used to be the milkman and also ran the stores in the past.   He was a Japanese POW in the war. He died several years back and had a write up in the Whitehaven News.    Regards.  picamarra.

I've never lived in Cumberland.  Just a few holidays there as a kid/teenager. Sad

I used to work there nearly 20 years ago.
They were lovely people to work for, I even had my wedding reception there, with photos in the back garden.
