Missing!

Hi All I am trying to find my missing Thompson/Ennever's. I can't find a marriage and I can't find the birth of 4 of their children and they don't seem to want to be found in the 1871 census. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
James Thompson b. 1837 in Higham, Kent d. 1893. in Shorne Kent Jane Ennever b. 1839 in Holborn, Middlesex d. 1880 in Shorne Kent
Their eldest child:- John Thompson b. 1866 in St Luke's Middlesex Jane is found in 1861 still living with her parents aged 22 named as Jane Ennever but down as married??? James is at sea on the Royal Navy Ship 'Narcissus' aged 24 also down as married.
Their next 4 children:
George A Thompson b. 1867 in Plymouth Eliza Thompson b. 1869 in Plymouth William H Thompson b. 1870 in Plymouth Emma J Thompson b. 1872 in Plymouth
All mentioned in the 1881 census. So presumably they must have been living in Plymouth in 1871. So why can't I find them? James could be on another ship somewhere, so where could his wife and children be hiding. I've tried looking in Devon, Middlesex, Kent and for both surnames, either trying her name or the children's names each in turn.
kind regards
Michaela

How come the Mother in Law in 1881 census staying with the family is a JANE Enevers, when the 1861 census shows the Jane you have in mind has a Mother Elizabeth?
The '1861' Jane seems to be up north in 1881 and 1901 ?
I think this is the Jane whose mother is with James in 1881 ...
1861 - RG9/279; Folio: 55; Page: 26; - St George in the East, Middx 19, Devonshire Street Jane Enever 45 WIDOW Head Umbrella Maker born Hornchurch Essex - hmmm, was looking for Sheeerness really ... William Enever 25 son Umbrella Frame Maker St George, Middx Jane Enever 23 UnMarried dau Umbrella Maker do
That Jane is still with Mum and bro in St Georges in 1871, so cant be the mother of the Plymouth-born Thompsons ?
do you have any of the Plymouth-born kids certs showing the mothers former names etc ?

ah, but wait - some else is researching the Thompsons - this is what they had to say about M-i-L Jane in 1881 ...
Elizabeth Mary rather than Jane Name recorded incorrectly by census taker. Jane Ennever was maiden name of James Thompson's late wife. Her mother now living with family. Birth date and place are same as E.M Griffin Submitted by Simon Ennever on 30/12/2008
Surname Griffin rather than Enever Name recorded incorrectly by census taker. Jane Ennever was maiden name of James Thompson's late wife. Her mother now living with family. Birth date and place are same as E.M Griffin Submitted by Simon Ennever on 30/12/2008
so its looking again that Jane IS the lass you originally had in 1861, and her mother Elizabeth was indeed born Sheerness
you should send a message to that Ancestry subscriber via the 1881 census entry note he's made - unless its you ??

How do you know that John C. Thompson (born 1866) was a child of James and Jane?
If the age in the 1881 Census is wrong there is the following birth which might be relevant:
George Alfred Thompson - 5c 40 St Germans Sep 1865.

However, from the first message of the thread they can't be found in the 1871 Census.
