Those particular children appear in the 1881 Census and the details are presumably from FreeBMD.
Emma Jane was born in 1872 and, therefore, could not be in the 1871 Census.

Hello Michaela
Possible "sighting" of James?
In the 1871 Census (RG10/1781/118) there is a James Thompson [married, occupation AB (Seaman), born c1835 in Woolwich Kent] on the vessel “Marthas” which is at anchor at Lowestoft Roads, Suffolk. Other crew: Wilkinson Cook, Master, 33 Charles Clauder, Mate, 39 John Hamilton, Cook Steward AB, 38 James Thompson, AB, 36 Thomas Prott, AB, 22

What a muddle It seems I could be mistaken about the children I found in St Germans, Cornwall. As Thompson seems to be quite a common name there. It's just that this is the first time I have actually found any of the 4 names with the right years in the same place. And in a place very near to Plymouth.
And yes Nigel I have just assumed about John C Thompson too being James & Jane's son, simply because its the right name and the right year in the right place, according to the 1881 census. Oh well, I've sent away for the cert. now, so I'll soon see if I was right or wrong. As for George Alfred Thompson born in St Germans in 1865, this couldn't be right, that's if my John is correct as they were still in London at that time. I think! I hope!
I still have found no sign of my family in the 1871 census, and what is interesting, is if the children I have found in the FreeBMD of St Germans are not the children of James & Jane, they don't seem to exist in that area in 1871 either.
Thank you Ivan, I guess it's a possibility that the James you have found on the Marthas anchored at Lowerstoft, could be my man, but why would he change his birth place to Woolwich??? Still Kent I guess, but not particular that close to higham. Still on the Thames though!
Anyway thank you all for you efforts. I'll let you know the out come of the John C Thompson Cert. when it arrives.
Cheers
Michaela

Hello Michaela
The following data is tentative but may provide an indication that the St Germans births you found could be the right ones:
Marriages 3Q 1895 Strood Vol. 2a Page 997 Dine, Eric Edward Luffman, Clara Matson, George William Thompson, Emma Jane
1901 Census (RG13 Piece 718, Folio 89, Page 13) 7, Hope Terrace, Higham MATSON, George, Head, Married, 27, Cement Lab, born Higham, Kent MATSON, Emma, Wife, Married, 26, born N(ot) K(nown) Cornwall MATSON, E, Daughter 5, born Higham, Kent MATSON, G, Son, 3, born Higham, Kent MATSON, L, Daughter, 2, born Higham, Kent
(Emma's age should be 28 or 29!)
It might be worth obtaining the birth certificate for Emma as this could provide an address which might help locate the family in 1871. To minimise potential abortive cost you could perhaps stiplulate “Reference Checking” points including father’s name and mother’s maiden name.
I hope that this is of some help.
Ivan

Returning to the earlier part of this thread, the birth Certificate for George Alfred Thompson (1865) could be helpful.

Hi Nigel
Yes I'm inclined to agree with you now. I assumed ages ago, that the Jane Thompson I found in 1871 census in Bell Alley Holborn was my family, so stupidly added that and the children with her to my tree. Forgetting I'd done this, I was still looking for the names of those children ie: John C Thompson births. That is why I ended up buying a certificate for him, to find out that he has nothing to do with my family. I guess that's what happens when you try and do too many things at once.
However I will be sending off for William, George and Eliza Thompson's cert. born in St Germans. I'll let you know the outcome.
Thanks
Michaela
