hi, I am trying to find the baptism of James TREBICK or any variant c1811 in Ellingham or surrounding villages. According to census records his birthplace is Ellingham or Fordingbridge. It would be a great help if someone could point me in the direction of his parents as he doesn't seem to belong to any of the Trebick/Tribick families elsewhere in Hampshire.

I have searched all available online parish records for quite a wide area covering both Dorset and Hampshire. He married in West Parley, Dorset and lived his married life in Bransgore. The marriage record does not give a father's name and he is "of the parish" of West Parley.
Ellingham parish records c1811 only seem to be available on fiche or at the record office in Winchester so i cannot get access to them. As it clearly says on several of the census returns Ellingham I would think that would be the first place to check.
I have considered the variant Triphook (there are a few around Fordingbridge) but can find no James Triphook.
If anyone can look him up in the Ellingham records I would be extremely grateful. NellieT

Have you considered buying the fiche and using a reader at your local library to progress this?
Mine was quite happy for me to do it that way, I think fiche was around 2 quid/sheet.

There was a James TRIPACK baptised 5th May 1811 at Ellingham. His mother was Sarah, no father is mentioned.

He would appear to have been illegitimate.

Thank you both for your help. I hope it will enable me to continue my research. It seems likely that this is is the same person as his only daughter was named Sarah. I don't think I have come across any Tripack elsewhere so it could be a variant of Triphook. Are there any other Tripacks or Triphooks in Ellingham? I found a lot of Triphooks in Breamore. James is listed as Triphook in the 1841 census but his children's births pre 1841 and his marriage was as James Trebick or Tribeck ( I can't remember which).

Thanks Pauline for your suggestion - I did consider buying the fiche as our local library used to have a fiche reader. When I went to enquire if I could use it I discovered it had gone and 5 computer terminals now sit in its place! I now seem to have a solution to the immediate question if not to a whole lot more that this has raised!
Good idea anyway.

Nothing further in Ellingham that I can see at the moment, not even a variant. Sad

There seem to be a multitude of possible spellings.
