Armed Constabulary Taranaki History Reference Book.
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 16:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi

For some months now I have been frustrated in my efforts to locate an informative history of the Armed Constabulary in Taranaki in the 1870/80s.  The files I have searched at Archives Wellington did not help me with my task.

I am trying to track one Eugene Keppel, Constable of Rahotu who was granted 148acres at Hawera valued at 180 pounds.  I found this in a reference to the Freeholders of New Zealand 1882, in the Christchurch library.

I have also found several references to Eugene in farm related matters in PapersPast.

I am hoping there is a histroy of the Armed Constabulary that records details of the date of engagement and demobing of Constables, that may help me find a record of Eugene's arrival in New Zealand.

Regards

doing a search in the NZSG online catalogue is the following book

Zero Alpha : the NZ Police Armed Offenders Squad Official History
Van Beynon, Ray
Publisher Auckland, Howling at the Moon Productions
Description A5, 246 pages, with regional indexes
Subject New Zealand--Police|New Zealand--Armed Constabulary|New Zealand--Anti Terrorist Commandos|New Zealand--Armed Offencers

It looks like it MAY...give a starting history

History page

http://www.riv.co.nz/rnza/hist/pf/pf2.htm#nzac
If you ask the people who have these pages these usually will know exactly where to find old records

Hi Althea

Many thanks for the excellent list of references.  I have the Zero Alpha book in my collection and that is more applicable to the Police of today.

However from your other links I now understand that Eugene was enlisted during the period when the New Zealand Constabulary Force was established in 1877, which saw the phasing out of the Armed Constabulary, and 1886 when the Police Force as serves us today was established.

I now have new avenues to explore, so many thanks again.

Anne Bromell's book refers to "Armed Constabulary 1867-86 registers of service giving personal details" .

Hi SPC

Many thanks for the usual leads which had in turn resulted in my finding of a very information article in the March/April 2007 issue of "The New Zealand Genealogist" by Graham Langton entitled"NZ Military records of the 1840s-1890s at Archives New Zealand".  Roll on some unseasonal weather so that I can spend time there without feeling guilty.

Once again my thanks for your help.
